  • Period: 1095 to 1291

    The Crusades

    The Crusades were a series of wars enacted by the church to retake land for the Christian and not the Muslim, stated as a holy quest told by the pope.
  • Nov 18, 1095

    The Council of Clermont

    A meeting of bishops, mainly from southern France, and a few representatives that exclaimed their mission to unite and take back the eastern land from the Muslims that had assaulted their brethren to the east; for it is their Christian duty to help their neighbors. Those who join get a plenary indulgence, which is a free pass to heaven from the pope itself.

    The Siege of Jerusalem

    This was the last battle of the first crusade, with a sprawling victory for the church. With them being in the holy lands, finally, the church was happy until the next three crusades.

    The Fourth and Last Major Crusade

    After the failed 2nd and 3rd crusades, Pope Innocent III instated a new crusade with other legates and encyclical letters.

    The Black Death

    An outbreak of a disease from northern Africa to western Eurasia, killing about a third of the population of the continent.

    The Plague Enters England

    As the plague ravages through Asia, many sailors and rats on trading ships passing trading route to trading route spreading plague carrying flea infested rats from city to city thus starting the pandemic.

    Massacre of Jews

    Due to superstition that the Jewish had sent them a plague, many town villainized them, driving them away and most likely killing them.

    Early Renaissance

    A time when the arts were becoming more appreciated producing icons such as Michelangelo, Da Vinci, and many more.

    Age of Exploration

    A time going along with the renaissance, also called the age of discovery, where many people would sail the seas to make many discoveries.

    Johannes Gutenberg Invents Printing Press

    The Gutenberg press was invented in 1450; therefore creating books that anyone could have.

    High Renaissance

    This when most of the recognizable of arts were made from artists Leonardo Da Vinci, Raphael, and Michelangelo.
