Renaissance & Reformation Timeline

  • Period: 1300 to

    Clothing during the Reaissance

    Lower-class people would wear linen, wool, or sheepskin. Upper-class people would wear nicer fabrics such as silk, satin, velvet, and brocade. Lower-class women would wear looser dresses/gowns because they didn't have servants to fit them into the tighter clothes that upper-class women would wear. Lower-class men wore clothes that were more fit for work whereas upper-class men wore more extravagant clothing.

    Food during the Renaissance

    Lower-class people would eat obviously cheaper food, such as bread with butter, cheese, and eggs. This was considered as a normal meal. Upper-class people would eat more expensive food. This would consist of red meats, chicken, and various other foods that were harder to get your hands on if you didn't have the resources.

    Social classes during the Renaissance

    There were four different social classes of this time period. They were the nobles, the merchants, and tradesmen, and the unskilled workers. Nobles lived outside of the city walls in big estates, and the nobles served as military officers, royal advisers, and politicians. The merchants served as wool processors, shipbuilders, and bankers. The tradesmen served as the shop keepers and shopkeepers. The unskilled workers were not dependent on one job, but many jobs to survive.

    Was a financial institution opened by the Medici family. It was the largest and most respected bank at the time. Some people even say the Medici family was the wealthiest of the time period in Europe.

    This invention is one of the reasons for the Renaissance to be such an important time period. It helped many things become widespread due to the convience of mass producing certain texts or messages. Some examples of these are Martin Luther's 95 Theses and the translation of the bible into German.

    This is a painting of Jesus and his disciples. It was created by Leonardo da Vinci. It's one of the most well-known paintings as well.

    The Mona Lisa painting is regarded as the most famous painting in the world. It was painted by Leonardo Da Vinci. This was looked at as one of the most influential products of the Renaissance as well.

    This is a sculpture of the biblical hero David. It was created by the Italian artist Michelangelo. These types of sculptures were common during this time period.

    This chapel is located in the Vatican as well. Many famous painters and architects contributed to the construction and decoration of it. Some people who helped were Michelangelo, Raphael, and Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

    The Sistine Chapel is in the Vatican. Michelangelo was tasked with painting ceiling of this chapel.

    Pope Leo X

    Pope Leo X
    Born Giovanni di Lorenzo de' Medici. He contributed greatly to the construction of St. Peter's Basilica. Before his death, Martin Luther released his 95 theses and started the reformation of the Catholic church.

    95 theses
    The 95 theses were a work written by Martin Luther. In these, Luther basically critiqued the Church and everything they were doing wrong in his eyes. His work was stapled to the doors of the Wittenberg church.

    The Diet of Worms was a council that came together to decide the fate of Martin Luther. The Holy Roman Emperor, as well as the cardinals, were in attendance. In conclusion, Luther was convicted as a heretic.

    After Luther got excommunicated he went into hiding. He hid in Wartberg castle. While Luther was in hiding the "Peasants Revolt" took place. This is where the Church jilled 100,000 of the 300,000 poor peasants.

    Before the reformation, the common people of the Roman Catholic Church didn't get to read the bible. They just were told what it said. The bible was only written in Latin and not in the people's native language.

    During this time period, indulgences were sold to common people. These indulgences were said to grant fast and easy passage through purgatory. These indulgences, however, were proved in later years to just be pieces of paper that made the church of money.

    This was a very important time period for astrology. This is because the times before actual data was taken down about outer soace, many people still believed in gods and magical thinking about what was actually out there.

    The flush toilet is an invention that isn't so much important but very helpful. Having a place to use the restroom instead of outhouse is very helpful. Also, waste used to flow on the streets so plubing is very helpful.

    Hamlet was written by William Shakespeare. This plawright is a tragedy that was written over a couple of years. Today, it is extremely famous.
