The Start Of The Renaissance
The word Renaissance means "rebirth". To the Renaissance "rebirth means the human sprirt had to be reawakend in the classical area of Greco-Roman times. It started after the Middle Ages so the Miedval Life was very dark. The Renaissance started in Florence, Italy because it was a wealthy trade city. For the Renaissance art new styles and techniques began such as: realism and emotion, classicism, geometric arrangments, perspective, emphasis on individuals, and using light. -

Giovanni Boccaccio
Giovanni Boccaccio was born in 1313 and died on December 21, 1375. He was an author, poet, and humanist. Giovanni Boccoccio was best known for his dialogue. He wrote stories like "Decameron" and "Oh Famous Women". Some of his best poetry is in the Italian vernacular. -

The Black Plague
The Black Plague or also know as the Black Death spread its way to Italy around 1348. The aurthor Giovanni Boccaccio lived during the time of the Black Plague which inspired him to write "The Decameron". Unfortunetly the symptoms were the swellings under the arm pits. The women and men had no idea of what was causing such disaster that they were shocked. Over one-third of the population was wiped out by this horrible diasease. -

Donatello
Donatell was born in 1386. Donato di Niccolo Bardi or amostly known as Donatello was an early Renaissance painter and sculptor from Florence. His most famous work was the life-sized work that was "David". Donatello revived the classical style of sculpture. His work was realistic and could be viewed from all sides. -

Cosimo de Medici
Cosimo de Medici was born on September 27, 1389 and died on August 1, 1469. He inherited his wealth from his father. Cosimo de Medici was the first Medici political dynasty. Cosimo began to look like a menace to the anti-Medici party. Medici was imprisonal and accused for the failure of the conquest of Lucca. -

Johann Gutenberg
Johann Gutenberg was born in 1398 and died on February 3, 1468. He was a german blacksmith, goldmith, printer, and publisher. Gutenberg introduced printing to Europe. He invented mechanical moveable type printing. This system allowed the mass production of books. -

Leonardo Da VInci
Leonardo Da Vinci was known as a true Renaissance Man. He was a painter and scultpor whose art was mostly known for realism and emotion. He was also a scientist, so he made sketches that revealed observations about human anatomy and new engineering techniques. Leonardo Da Vinci was mostly known for his masterpiece of the 'Mona Lisa".His "Last Supper" shows Jesus' last meeting with 12 apostles before the crucifixion. -

Desiderius Erasmus
Desiderius Erasmus was a Dutch Renaissance humanist, Catholic priest, social critic, teacher, and theologian. He wrote pure Latin style. Erasmus was the leader of a northern European humanist coterie and an arbiter of northern European cultural tastes. He was very famous for his use of irony. He was also very famous for his "philosophy of Christ". -

Machlavelli was born May 3, 1469 and died June 21, 1527. He grew up in Florence, Italy. Machiavelli was a historian, diplomat, philospher, humanist and writer. He wrote carnival, comedies, sosngs, and poetry. His best known book was The Prince, which influenced politics. -

Albrecht Durer
Albrecht Durer was born May 21, 1471 and died April 6, 1528. He was a german painter, printmaker, mathematician, theorist from Nuremberg. Durer was engaged more than any other Northern European artist by the artistic practices and theoretical intrestes in Italy. He accessed some of Europes outstanding theologians such as Erasmus, Philipp Melanchthon,and Willibald Pirkheimer. His watercolors mark him as one of Europeans first landscape artists. -

Sir Thomas More
Sir Thomas More was born on February 7, 1478 and died on July 6, 1535. He created the idea of a Utopia, which is an ideal place to live. Sir Thomas More left the Catholic Church becauses he believed some had a far stricted discipline and believed some reform was needed. He set out and started the Church of England. He was executed in 1535 for treasons. -

Baldassare Castiglione
Baldassare Castiglione was born on December 6, 1478 and died on February 2,1529. He was an Italian courtier, diplomat, soldier and well-known author. He wrote a book called "The Book of the Courtier". This book shaped the Italian Renaissance. It put out a different perspective of what a wife should do to help her husband. He also worte many poems in Italian and Latin. -

Raphael
Raffaello Sanzio or better known as " Raphael" was a painter and architect during the High Renaissance. Raphael works are organized by his early career, the Florentine period, and his last years. Raphael made a self portrait when he was about 15 or 16 after his father and step-mother died. His style was stylistic and technique was thickly applied in his paint. His first work was of himself was the "Baronci Altarpiece". His greatest painting was the "School of Athens". -

Some believe the end of the Renaissance was because of the French Invasions of the early 16th century. The legacy of the Renaissance will always be remembered by the artistics and the socail changes. It will also be remembered of the artist's that have lived upon us such as: William Shakespeare, Donatello, Desiderius Erasmus, and etc. -

Northern Renaissance
The Northern Renaissance first spread from Italy. Scholars and merchants visited city-states and the ideas started to spread. The Northern Renaissance developed its own characteristics. France was the mostly recognized for its architecture. While England was popular in its literature like Shakespeares plays. Netherlands was known for its realism in art. -

William Shakespeare was born in April 23, 1564 and died on his birthday in 1616. He wasa an English poet, playwright, and actor. Shakespeare mostly wrote comedies and tragedies. He is often called England's national poet and is known for Hamlet, Othello, and Macbeth. Shakespeare didnt become recognized or popular until the 19th century.
