Kindergarten
Students in Kindergarten learn the alphabet, simple words, and sight words. By the end of Kindergarten, students should be able to read simple stories. -
First Grade
Students in first grade continue to learn about letters, sounds, and letter combinations. Students read stories that are more difficult than those read in Kindergarten. Comprehension skills begin to emerge. -
Second Grade
In second grade, students continue to learn and practice letter combinations. There is a greater emphasis on comprehension. Students begin to read fiction and nonfiction books. -
Third Grade
Students work less on learning letter combinations and work more on comprehension. This is the first time students are more independent in their reading. -
4th Grade
Students read mostly on their own, sharpening their self monitoring skills. Students are becomming more independent readers. -
5th Grade
This is very much like fourth grade. Students continue to work on comprehension, independent reading, and self monitoring.
