Shay's Rebellion
Farmers rebelled and shut down courthouses across Massachusetts. The rebellion caused the government officials to decide to make a new government. -
Constitutional Convention (First Meeting)
Delegates representing every state except Rhode Island gathered at Philadelphia's Pennsylvania State House. They got rid of the Articles of Confederation and started to form a new government. -
Great Compromise
The compromise between the delegates which proposed a bicameral legislature. It also proposed proportional representation in the house of Representatives and equal representation in the Senate. -
Constitution adopted
After months of debating, the Constitution was complete. All but 3 of the 42 delegates at the Constitutional Convention signed the Constitution. -
Ratification by DE
Over three days the Delaware delegates voted on the Constitution. Delaware was the very first state to ratify the Constitution. On December 7th, the vote was 30-0. -
Ratification by PA
Pennsylvania was the second state to ratify the Constitution. The debating took 22 days.The final vote was 46-23. -
Ratification by NH
New Hampshire was one of the last states to ratify the Constitution. The final vote was 57-47. -
Inauguration of George Washington
On this date, George Washington took the oath of office and became the first president of the U.S. In 1787, he had been the elected president of the Constitutional Convention. -
Ratification by RI
Rhode Island was the very last state to ratify the Constitution. The final vote was 34-32. -
Bill of Rights
The Bill of Rights was made a part of the Constitution by Virginia's ratification of the Constitution. All but two of the amendments were added to the Constitution.
