Asa Whitney
Plan for federal government to subsidize the building of the railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific. -
Kansas-Nebraska Act
Intended to win approval for a line from Chicago insuring sectional controversy between the North and South forced a delay in the plans. -
Transcontanetnal railroad
Built by two companies; each reseved federal land grants of ten alternate secutions per mile on both side of the line. -
Promontory Summit
Meeting place of Union Pacific RR and the Central Pacific RR. Joined with a golden rail spike. -
Additional lines
The northern Pacific RR started at lake superior and went to portland, Oregon.
The Santa Fe extaned from atchison,Kansas to Los Angeles.
Southern Pacific connected L.A. to New Orleans. -
Great Northern
Completed in 1893!!!
Each company recieved grants of land but no governmanet loans. the promise of land often resolted in poor construction, which was repaired much later.
