Castle School magazine
Looking back now at my magazine I think that it could have been better. I have learned a lot of techneques since that I would have used differetly. As I didn't have much expereince using these programs it was a lot different as I would have probably used comic life instead of pages. I found this task usefull as it gave me experence in using mac programs -
Research
Befroe making my own magazine I researched and reviewed other magazines past students have made. This helped later when I was planning my music magazine as I had experience analysing magazines. -
Institution Research
Doing this task I used Imovie where I made a short video on the Instistutions. I learned about what they did and who they publish. I learned how to make a movie using short slides and pictures. I was shocked to find out how great the circulation of magazines were as I don't read magazines myself. -
Representation
I studied representations to learn techneques to use in my magazine. I found eye contact, clothes and colour schemes all are used to attract readers. For example if it were to be all pink it would mainly be aimed at young girls. I aimed to include the techenques above in my magazine -
Article 1st draft
I looked at a lot of articles as I hadn't done one in my preliminary task. I then wrote out my first article. This was difficult trying to get into the style of writing like a reporter but I managed to do it. As I changed my double page I had to change my article as I found doing a band would be to difficult. -
Rate Card
Looking at my target audience I made a rate card. I got my target audience by asking people to take part in doing surveys. I found the best style would be an Indie rock type but with a hint of other genres. The rate card increased my skill in Pages as I had limited expereince on it. This helped when making my magazine -
Layout plan
I initialy did this plan so I had an idea of what type of pictures I wanted. Also I knew how much writing on my article on my double page I needed. I also learned it's good to plan from the preliminary task as I found the pictures wern't the right siza and they overlapped too much. -
First Shoot
This was my first shoot I did. I used inderesting angles, mainly low as I was reporting them to be up and coming stars. I found it didn't really grasp the music style as there were no references such as guitars or drum sticks. I left this shoot out and re-did it with more interesting poses and outfits. This helped me realise little things like location and props do matter in a shoot. -
2nd Shoot
This was my second shoot. I found it was so much better than the first as I had better props like guitars and microphones. I thought the fashion was much better, instead of jackets I had shirts as I found it fits the genre more like this. I found my camera skills improved a lot doing these tasks as I was able to focus on the models and leave the background out of focus. -
Double page construction
With this page I had to make polaroid pictures. I found it taught me a lot as I had to use layers then get out the eraser, but change the shape of it. I then rubbed out very small sections so they got an old effect. Ihad never done anything like this before but I found it was effective -
Contents
I learned how to make good use of space on this page. I found that the contents needs to be full of infomation. I found getting the correct layout was also important as it interests the reader. They would not want to read a boring magazine. The pictures I used are effective as gives a realistic view of what contents pages have. -
Front cover
This was the final of my front cover I thought the colour scheme worked well together, as I wanted a rock look but with a softer tone so I decided to use yellow to tone it down a little bit. -
Double Page
Looking at this magazine now I can happily say how much i've improved since the preliminary task. The layout pictures and colour scheme is so much better. I feel that the reaserch really paid off in doing this and the hours I spent making my magazine perfect was worth it. -
Front cover construction
This was my contruction on my front cover. I had to change it a lot as I didn't think it looked good enough. At first I found the title was too sporty and didn't repersent music. Also finding the right placement for my main picture was difficult as I wanted him to be big but in the corner. I learned good techneques in photoshop with this, such as the magnetic lasso and I played around with the shape tools.
