    Her mother is beheaded

    Her mother Anne Boleyn was accused of adultery and was beheaded on the orders of Henry VIII.
  • 1547

    Her father dies

    Her nine-year-old half-brother Edward becomes King. Elizabeth joins the household of her stepmother, Catherine Parr.
  • Jan 28, 1547

    King Henry VII dies and Prince Edward becomes Kind Edward VI

    King Henry VII died on January 28, 1547 from an infection and so King Edward, Elizabeth's half brother, took the throne.

    King Edward VI dies and Mary becomes Queen Mary I.

    King Edward VI dies and Elizabeth's half-sister, Mary, becomes Queen Mary I.
  • Mar 18, 1554

    Elizabeth is imprisoned in the Tower of London

    Her half-sister, Queen Mary I, accuses Elizabeth of trying to overthrow her.

    Elizabeth is free

    King Philip II of Spain, Queen Mary I's husband, feared the people would blame him if anything happened to Elizabeth, so he persuaded Mary to free Elizabeth and watch her closely.

    Queen Mary I dies and Elizabeth becomes Queen Elizabeth I

  • 1570

    Elizabeth is excommunicated from teh Catholic Church

    The Pope excommunicated Queen Elizabeth for her public support of Protestantism and was very religiously tolerant.
  • Defeat of the Spanish Armada

    This defeat was monumental, transformed England into a true world-power because they proved to be stronger than the most powerful country in the world.
