Second Meat Inspection Act Passed
Congress passes the Second Meat Inspection Act of 1906; the U.S. Drug Administration must inspect all animals destined for human consumption. -
Meat Inspection Act was passed
After a long fight the Meat Inspection Act was passed. The fight began after Theodore Roosevelt and his troops became ill after eating the canned meat the US army served as rations during the Spanish American War. -
Pure Food And Drug Act
The same day that the Meat Inspection Act was passed, Roosevelt signed into law the Pure Food and Drug Act. The act empowered the Departments of the Treasury, Agriculture, and Commerce to inspect any "specimen" of food and drug for purity and truth in safety and labeling. Should the departments find manufacturers selling impure food and drugs or falsely advertising them, the act empowered federal courts to fine violators $500 and imprison them for a year. -
