Before our story begins begins
Peter is happy and engaged to Annemarie's older sister, Lise. -
Join the Resistance
Peter and Lise join the Resistance group. This is a secretive group that works against Hitler and his army. We do not find out until the end of the text that Peter and Lize were apart of this group. -
Lize dies.
Peter becomes distant. He has lost the love of his life. We are told she passed in a horrible accident. -
Peter visits the Rosens.
Peter visits Annemarie's Family. He tells them that the Germans have started closing Jewish stores. He takes Mr. and Mrs. Rosen (Ellen's parents) into hiding because they are Jewish. Even though Peter is brave to be working with the resistance and taking families into hiding, he must be scared and worried for his life. -
Peter is killed.
At the end of the novel, we learn that Peter was captured by the Germans and executed in the public square in Copenhagen. Peter died for what he believed — "he was proud to have done what he could for his country and for the sake of all free people."
