    Abe Lincoln
    Lincoln led the U.S. through the American Civil War and kept the union together. He also led the U. S. through slavery. In April 1865 LIncoln was assassinated.
  • Ulysses S. Grant

    Ulysses S. Grant
    Ulysses was also there to help abolish slavery in his time as president. While president Ulysses defeated the Klu Klux Klan. Grant was a war general so he had practice being a leader and that really showed when he became president.
  • Rutherford B. Hayes

    Rutherford B. Hayes
    Began the reforming that led to the civil service. He ended the Reconstruction and brought back the home rule to the South. Hayes wanted to "abolish sectionalism, end the war, and bring peace."-His diary
  • James Garfield

    James Garfield
    Garfield pledges to let William Conkling help him decide with government nominations. Later Garfield ignores Conkling when choosing the secretary of treasury, along with many other things. Finally he tries to replace Conkling and there is a big democratic fight.
  • Grover Cleveland

    Grover Cleveland
    Signs the Presidential Succession Act when his vice president dies. Vetoes the first bills asking for pension for veterans who had been rejected by the pensions bureau. Accepts the Statue of Liberty and welcomes Ellis Island.
  • Benjamin Harrison

    Benjamin Harrison
    Harrison decided against the informal "kitchen cabinet". Harrison expanded the Navy because of he toured England and discorvered a plan. Many states joined during his presidency.
  • William McKinley

    William McKinley
    McKinley wanted to revise the tariff laws. After the ship Maine explodes in Spains harbor and the U. S. blames Spain we declare war on Spain. Spain declares wra on us and we go to war under McKinleys power.
  • Theodore Roosevelt

    Theodore Roosevelt
    Took over after McKinkey was assassinated. Passes the Isthmian Act and the Philippine Government Act. Was a very important person in the Anthracite Coal Strike.
  • William H. Taft

    William H. Taft
    Calls Congress to a special session to revise a tariff. Taft tried to get congress to adopt an amendment for collecting personal federal income taxes. They adopted the 16th amendment instead.
  • Woodrow Wilson

    Woodrow Wilson
    Wilson also wanted to revise certain tariffs. Adopts the 17th amendment. Signs the Underwood-Simmons Act.
