President Abraham Lincoln
During Lincoln's presidency he abolished slavery. Lincoln led the Union in defeating the Confederacy. Henceforth Lincoln preserved the Union. -
Andrew Johnson
Johnson was President Lincoln's Vice President and became president after Lincoln's assassination. Black codes were encouraged by his actions. Johnson was eventually impeached. -
Ulysses S. Grant
Grant allowed Radical Reconstruction and led the Radical Republicans. He destroyed the Ku Klux Klan. Many scandals and corruptions were revealed throughout his presidencies. -
Rutherford B. Hayes
Hayes believed in a meritocratic goverment. He vetoed the Bland Allison Act. Hayes wanted a civil service reform. -
James A. Garfield
Garfield strengthened Federal Authority in the New York Customs House. He exposed corruption in the Post Office. Garfield selected black men to fill important federal positions. -
Grover Cleveland
Cleveland led the Bourbon Democrats. He supported political reform and fiscal conservatism. He fought political corruption. -
William McKinley
McKinley led the nation to victory in the Spanish American War. He declared that the U.S. would help Cuba gain liberation and independence, but stay neutral. He raised tariffs higher than anyone in history. -
Theodore Roosevelt
During Roosevelt's presidency he negotiated with Panama to build the Panama Canal. He founded the Progressive "Bull Moose' Party. He recieved the Nobel Peace Prize for helping end the Russo-Japanese War. -
William Howard Taft
Taft strengthened the Interstate Commerce Commission. He passed the 16th Amendment. He improved the postal service's performance. -
Woodrow Wilson
Wilson led America throught World War 1. He established the Federal Reserve Act and the Federal Trade Commission. He passed the Adamson Act.
