  • First Trimester: Month One

    First Trimester: Month One
    Week 1 - Week 4
    The fertilized egg will develop a water-tight sac that forms around it. This sac will gradually fill with fluid which is known as the amniotic sac. The placenta develops during this time.
    First few weeks of pregnancy, a primitive face will take form with large dark circles for eyes. The mouth, lower jaw, and throat are developing. The blood cells are taking shape and the circulation starts to begin. A tiny heart will beat 65 times a minute by the end of the fourth week.
  • First Trimester

    This is approximately a 12 week time span. This is considered to be the first three months of pregnancy. The baby will change from a small grouping of cells to a fetus that is starting to have a baby's features.
  • First Trimester: Month Two

    First Trimester: Month Two
    Week 5 - Week 8
    Facial features continue to grow. Tiny buds grow for arms and legs, each ear begins as a small fold, and the fingers, toes, and eyes are also forming. The brain, spinal cord, and other neural tissue of the CNS are well-formed now. Digestive tract and sensory organs are developing. Bones are replacing cartilage. The head is larger in proportion to the rest of the body. The heartbeat can be detected.
  • First Trimester: Month Three

    Week 9 - Week 12
    Arms, hands, fingers, feet, and toes are fully formed. Baby can do things such as opening and closing fist and mouth. Fingernails and toenails are beginning to develop. Teeth are beginning to form under the gums! Reproductive organs are starting to develop.
    By the end of the third month, the baby is fully formed. Organs and limbs will continue to develop in order to become functional. Circulatory and urinary systems are also working.
  • Second Trimester: Month 4

    Week 13 - Week 16
    Heartbeat audible through an instrument called a doppler. Fingers and toes are well-defined. Now being formed are the eyelids, eyebrows, eyelashes, nails, and hair. Teeth and bones become denser. Baby can do things such as suck their thumb, yawn, stretch, and make faces.
    The nervous system is starting to function. Reproductive organs and genitalia are now fully developed and now can determine the gender
  • Second Trimester

    This is considered the middle section of the pregnancy. Most women would say this is the best part of the pregnancy. Morning sickness is most likely to be hone and the discomfort of early pregnancy has faded. The baby will start to develop facial features during this trimester. The movement will become noticeable such as baby flip and turns in the uterus. The gender of the baby is usually determined during this trimester.
  • Second Trimester: Month 5

    Second Trimester: Month 5
    Week 17 - Week 20
    During this month, the women will start to feel the baby moving around. The development of muscles begins and they will start to exercise them. Hair begins to grow on the baby's head. Lanugo (soft, fine hair) that covers the baby's shoulders, back and temples are presented that protect the baby.
    The whitish coating called vernix caseosa covers the baby's skin. This covering will protect the baby from long exposure to the amniotic fluid.
  • Second Trimester: Month 6

    Second Trimester: Month 6
    Week 21 - Week 24
    If you were able to look inside the uterus, you would be able to see that the baby's skin is a reddish color, wrinkly, and veins are now visible. The finger and toe prints would be visible.
    The baby can now part their eyelids and even open their eyes.
    The baby can now respond to sounds. They will move or their heart rate will increase. Mother can feel jerking motions during this time which is a result of the baby hiccups.
  • Second Trimester: Month 7

    Second Trimester: Month 7
    Week 25 - Week 28
    The baby's body will continue to grow and mature and will develop reserves of body fat. The baby's hearing is fully developed. The baby will continue to change positions frequently and responds to stimuli, including sound, pain, and light. The amniotic fluid begins to diminish at this point.
  • Third Trimester: Month 8

    Third Trimester: Month 8
    Week 29 - Week 32
    Baby continues to grow, mature, and reserve fat. The baby will become more active with more frequent kicks. The brain of the baby is developing rapidly at this tie and the baby can see and hear.
    Most of the internal systems are well-developed but for the lungs. At this time the lungs are still considered to be immature
  • Third Trimester

    This is the final part of the pregnancy! The baby will gain weight quickly during this stage. 40 weeks is considered the fully-developed and prime time for the mother to give birth.
  • Third Trimester: Month 9

    Week 33 - Week 36
    The baby continues to grow and mature. The lungs are close to being fully developed! The baby's reflexes are coordinated so they are now able to blink, close their eyes, turn the head, grasp firmly, and respond to sounds, lights, and touch.
  • Third Trimester: Month 10

    Third Trimester: Month 10
    Week 37 - Week 40
    This is the final month!! The mother could go into labor at any time and the mother will notice less movement due to the baby having less space to move around. The baby is already is position (head down in the uterus) for birthing. This is where the mother will feel most uncomfortable in the final stretch of pregnancy as the baby finally drops down to the pelvis.
