Prenatal Development Timeline

  • Month 1

    Month 1
    This is where conception first begins. The egg gets fertilized and turns into a zygote, which eventually turns into a blastocyst. The blastocyst implants in the uterus lining and becomes an embryo. The mother may experience a missed period, cramping, and could take a pregnancy test now.
  • Month 2

    Month 2
    Where the heart, bones, and other organs start to form. Arm and leg buds will also start to appear. Heat continues to develop, and then beats a regular rhythm. Lungs begin to form, ears and eyes begin to form. All major organs will be formed by this time, too.
  • Month 3

    Month 3
    Eyes, ears, arms, and legs are identifiable. All body parts are now present. Mother can begin to hear baby's heartbeat with an ultrasound. Face will be more defined, intestines will be in the abdomen. Genitals will develop, teeth buds will form and the head is about half the size of the fetus.
  • Month 4

    Month 4
    Baby's sex will become more apparent, baby can swallow and make urine. Mom's morning sickness will start to disappear, appetite will increase, trouble sleeping, swelling in hands and feet, mom might feel baby moving, and mom might experience heartburn.
  • Month 5

    Month 5
    Baby now has regular sleep and wake patterns. All organs and structures are formed, and breathing movements occur, even though they are underdeveloped. The baby may begin to suck thumb, and it is also more active. Heartbeat can be heard with a stethoscope. Baby has nails, fingerprints, eyebrows, lashes, and maybe even some hair.
  • Month 6

    Month 6
    Baby has lung development, and can now breathe air, regular sleep and wake patterns, and eyes can begin to partially open and close. Baby begins to stretch and kick, and the central nervous system directs breathing and body temperature. Mom breasts may leak, can grow stretch marks, leg cramps, pelvic pain, and fatigue.
  • Month 7

    Month 7
    Baby will have rapid weight gain, and the Lanugo starts to fall off. Baby will continue to grow nails, develop breathing motion, respond to light, and the skin will be pink and smooth. Mom will start to have Braxton-Hicks contractions, still have pelvic pain, and still gain some weight.
  • Month 8

    Month 8
    Baby starts to turn head down to prepare for labor, and takes up most of the amniotic sac. Baby will continue to gain around .5 lbs a week until delivery. Brain, lungs, and liver are still developing, lung development during last few weeks will help with fewer complications at birth and weight gain will help with temperature control once born.
  • Month 9

    Month 9
    This is usually when the birth occurs, during week 39 or 40. But, the baby could come late at around 42 weeks, too. Mom will give birth to the baby and it will come into the world.
