    The Fugitive Slave Act was a law that allowed citizens to help in the capturing of runaway slaves. The slaves that were captured were put in jail for six months and a $1000 fine.

    The author of Uncle Tom's Cabin was Harriet Beecher Stowe. Harriet was against slavery and the slave states. She was visiting Kentucky and she experinced seeing slaves and the contions they were in an that's when she starting writing Uncle Tom's Cabin. It took her 2 years to write (1850-1852). More than 500,000 copies were sold in the first five years alone.

    The Kansas-Nebraska Act made land west of Missouri into two territories, Kansas & Nebraska. It allowed the new settlers to decide if slavery was legal in these territories or not. They were both allowed to be free states. The Act was passed on May 30th, 1854.

    Dred Scott was a slave who lived with his wife and his master John Emerson. They lived in a free state but they moved to Missouri. Dred Scott's master ended up dying. Dred tried sueing for his freedom but he lost his case. He didn't count as a citizen because he was black even if he was free or a slave.

    A man named John Brown, who was an aboltionist, had a group of people who helped him capture citizens of Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. He trie giving guns to slaves to kill there owners but the plan failed. He was captured and sentanced to death.

    The Election of 1860 was the election between Abraham Lincoln (Republican) and Stephen Douglas (Democrat). Lincoln won and became the 16th U.S. president with 40% of the popular votes and had a total of 180 electorial votes. As Lincoln won the elecion, South Carolina seceded from the Union.

    Secession in 1860 was what caused the Civil War to begin. Eleven slave states in the upper and lower parts of the south seceded from the union and became the Confederate States of America. Their capitol was in Montgomery, Alabama but later moved to Richmond, Virginia. The president of the CSA was Jefferson Davis.
