Pre-revolution Timeline

  • Treaty of Paris

    Treaty of Paris
    -Ended the French and Indian War
    Impact:
    1) Britain blames colonials for the war.
    2) The British impose new taxes to repay war debts
    3) Restricted colonial access to the OH river valley, and this very much upset the Americans.
    4) Showed the colonists the weakness in the British's army.
    5) Increased enforcement of colonial laws and regulations.
  • Proclamation Act of 1763

    Proclamation Act of 1763
    -Drew a line down the Appalacian mountains that restricted American access to land west of the line.
    Impact:
    -Americans had just fought for that land and had a sense of entitlement
  • Sugar Act

    -This lowered the tacx from the Molasses act and its goal was to decrease smuggling, a major problem in the colonies
    -Americans were outraged at the act even though they should hav n paying a higher tax
    -Amercians adopted the philosphy of ther 'Real Whigs' in British Parliament.
  • Stamp Act

    Stamp Act
    -Tax on all pronted goods, from newspapers to diplomas.
    Impact:
    1)Stamp Act Congress
    2)Sons of Liberty
    3)Daughters of Liberty
    4)Boycotts
    5)Non-importation agreements
    -All of these were efforts to stop the Stamp Act. The colonies unite in boycotts and non-importation agreements and are successful in its repealing.
  • Quatering Act

    Quatering Act
    -Americans were required to house and feed British soldiers in the colonies
    Impact:
    -Americans were already upset they were being taxed by the British and that British military was present to enforce taxez. To futher make them house these soldiers made them very angry.
  • Boston Massacre

    Boston Massacre
    -British troops fired into a crowd who were thorwing icer and clubs aat a soldier
    -Left 5 dead, including Crispus Attucks, and others wounded
    Impact:
    -Samuel Adams and Paul Revere coined the event the "Bloody Massacre" for propoganda purposes and blamed the British
    -This incited a feeling of united animosity among the colonies towards the British
  • Tea Act

    Tea Act
    -Established a British monopoly on tea and tax it.
    Impact:
    -American liked tea and were upset with the monopoly(Which allows for increased prices) and the tax.
    -Sons of Liberty organize to react.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Boston Tea Party
    -Reaction to the Tea Act
    -Samuel Adams and the Sons of Liberty organize in protest.
    -Group of 40-50 colonist, dressed as Mohawk Indians raid British ships and dump 1 million dollars worth of tea into Boston Harbor.
    -Nobody gets in trouble, and this leads the King to establish the Coercive acts to punish Boston.
  • Coercive(Intolerable) Acts

    Coercive(Intolerable) Acts
    -A reaction from the King to the Boston Tea Party.
    -A series of acts shutting down Boston as a port forcing them to rely on other colonies, their government, made it so British troops would be tried in Britain, reinforced the Quatering Act, and to add insult to injury allowed the French North of Boston to be more autonomous.
    Impact:
    -Some support came from other colonies even though they were not being affected by the acts to combat Bostons isolation, though they were hesitant to usurp King.
  • Lexington and Concord

    Lexington and Concord
    -British troops were set to seize guns and ammunition and Americans preempted their seizure.
    -Both sides lined up at Lexington
    -Shots were fired. The Americans scrambled away, then amubushed the British on the march home.
    Impact:
    -Strong dissentions were out in the open and military conflict had started
    -2nd Continental Congress is called in response
