    https://bit.ly/2K3L6oN Ed contracted polio when he was 14 and since then he has been paralyzed from the neck down not including a couple fingers and toes and has been in a wheelchair almost all of his life. He was the first student accepted to UC Berkeley that had to rely on a wheelchair. The college didn’t accommodate for Ed and he had to fight to get help from the school and advocate for the rights of disabled people

    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a law that protects people from discrimination based on their disability. A child has equal access to education. It was caused by the sit-in at the San Francisco Office of the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare. The act is still in use today.

    When passed, the law allowed for free education for children with disabilities.     Ed Roberts was diagnosed with Polio at 14. Ed and his parents fought for his right to go to school with other children. After he graduated, he decided that he wanted to go to Berkley. Berkely did not want Ed to join their students, but again, Ed fought and won. He made a Disabled Student Organization on campus which led to him opening the First Center of Independent Living and started the World Institute on Disability. https://bit.ly/2qVn5aJ

(little transportation, few curb cuts, few interpreters) There is also little the support needed to contribute to society, live with dignity, and achieve a high quality of life.”

    Passing Law 94-142 allowing children with disabilities free education. Passing the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 including section 504 with ends discrimination again disabled people. Passing of Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 which is a comprehensive civil rights law ending discrimination in workplaces, accommodations, telecommunications, etc.
