Teddy roosevelt saw an oppurtunity to connect the two great oceans, the atlantic and the pacific. He proposed to the Panamanians $10 million and $250,000 yearly rent. There was only on problem the people wanted it but the government didn't like the idea. -

Revolt in Panama
The revolt in panama took place in Panama. With the help of outside sources panamanians revolted against their government. US gunboats waited in the harbor as support. As soon as the revolt was over Teddy Roosevelt immediatly recognised panama as a free nation. -
Gaining Control of the Canal
A frenchman acting for panama signed a treaty giving the us control of the Isthmus of Panama. The US agreed to pay the $10 million and $250,000 yearly rent. The canal was ten miles long and after the treaty was signed the US gained permanent control of the region. -
Struugles and Hardships
A main struggle in the building of the canal was building locks that would help ships shange elevation. Major landslides killed around 6000 people throught the entire building process. Yellow Fever also was a major problem in the building of the canal, work couldn't begin until the desiese was wiped out. -
Yellow Fever Killed
In order to wipe out the yellow fever Gorgas had to take several steps. First he ordered his workers to drain swamps and rain collectors. Next he had to spray brush with chemicals to kill the mosquitos.He finaly suceded and killed all of the mosquitos ending the Yellow Fever in Panama. -
Panama Canal Opens
Video on canalThe first ship to go to through the panama canal was the SS Ancon. The construction and finishing of the panama canal was necisary to advance in technology and in trade. It conected the 2 major oceans used for trade between all countries. -

The world needed a new way to get from ocean to ocean. President roosevelt helped the panamains revolt and become free. Troughout struggles and hardships the constuction was finished. The completion of the canal connected two oceans and advanced trade and technology forever.
