The first true diving bell was created by Guglielmo de Lorena. This diving bell had enough air to keep someone underwater for an hour. -

First Plans for a Submarine
The very first plans for a submarine are formulated by William Bourne. -
First Submarine
Cornelis Drebbel builds the worlds first submarine. He makes several trips of about 15-20 feet below sea level. It was made of wood and and iron; on the inside, it was covered with leather. The submarine had about twelve oarmen. -
First Air-Replenished Diving Bell
Edmund Halley figures out how to replenish a diving bell. He figured that you have to send wighted barrels of air down to the diving bell. -
First Waterproof Suit
Chevalier de Beauve delopes the first water proof suit. This includes lead shoes and two leather tubes for air. -
First Enclosed Diving Device
John Lethbridge develops the very firs, completly enclosed, one-man diving suit. It includes a glass window to see through and two arm holes with watertight sleeves. -
First Diving Helmet
Sieur Freminet inventes a helment were a ube is connected and air is pummed through the tube to the helmet. He is able to stay underwater for an hour. -

Edward Forbes, a British Naturalist, beviles that life can't exist below 300 ft. This causes a 20 year debate. -

Edward Forbes' theory of no deep sea life was questioned when the US surveys the coast and finds indications of sea life more than 6000 ft. below sea level. -

A british ship challenger 2 uses sonar to discover the deepest point in the ocean nearly seven miles down. -
Deepest Ocean Dive
The deepest ocean dive is conducted by Jacques Piccard and two other men. They go down to about a depth of 35,797 ft. below sea level. -
