Pregnancy/Lactation
Foods to avoid: raw meat, deli meat, fish w/ mercury, smoked seafood, fish exposed to industrial pollutants, raw shellfish, raw eggs, soft cheeses, unpasteurized milk, pate, caffeine, alcohol, & unwashed veggies.
Special nutritional needs: 71 mg of protein per day, 1000 mg of calcium per day, 300 extra calories per day, 600 mg of folate per day, & 27 mg of iron per day -
Infancy
Foods to avoid: Honey, peanut butter, nuts, corn, egg whites, whole milk as a drink.
Special Nutritional needs: The amount of macronutrients and micronutrients needed are much higher in infants than adults because infants grow much quicker than adults. Infants need energy (about 490 calories per day), water, and essential fatty acids. -
Toddler
Foods to avoid: whole grapes, large pieces of meats, poultry, and hot dogs; candy and cough drops, nuts, seeds, popcorn, chips, pretzels, raw carrots, raisins, peanut butter and marshmallows.
Special nutritional needs: to make sure your toddler is getting a balance of fats, protein, carbohydrates, vitamins, and minerals, include foods from the major food groups each day, including: dairy products such as milk and cheese, cereal grains, rice, potatoes, breads, pasta, veggies and fruits, -
Preschool
Foods to avoid: slippery foods such as grapes, large pieces of meat, poultry, hotdogs, candy and cough drops.
Special Nutritional needs: Preschoolers should get about 1 cup of fruit, 1 cup of vegetables, 3 ounces of grains, 4 ounces of protein, 2 cups of dairy, 3 teaspoons per day. -
School-aged
Foods to avoid: Fast foods and junk food, & sweetened drinks
Special nutritional needs: Children need protein, vegetables and fruits, cereals and grains, good fats and tap water, to meet their nutrition needs for healthy growth and development. -
Teen-aged
Foods to avoid: Jellied fruit, sugary cereal, soda, fried food, full fat, high sugar foods.
Special Nutritional needs: A teens diet should include protein, carbohydrates, Dietary fat, vitamins and minerals. Most teens get twice as much protein as they need and they eat empty calories which means you are eating because you are bored. -
Adults
Foods to avoid: soft drinks, pre-made icing, kids’ cereal, stick margarine, frosted donuts, instant noodles, potato chips, shortening, frozen dinners, processed meats.
Special nutritional needs: carbohydrates, fats, protein, fruits and vegetables, dairy, sugars, and supplements. -
Older Adults
Foods to avoid: Raw eggs, soft cheese, raw meats, sushi, unpasteurized milk and juice.
Special Nutritional needs: As you age, your body needs the same amount of protein, vitamins, and minerals and, in some instances, even more nutrients.
