The Mayflower Compact was signed by 41 English Colonists on the ship Mayflower. They signed it to establish some form of government which is now the United States. I think that the Mayflower Compact represents social contract because the people were agreeing how they would govern their community. -

Patrick Henry's Speech to the Virginia Convention
To defend their rights, Patrick Henry told fellow Virginians to fight. A very famous sentence from his speech at the Virginia Convention, was “give me liberty, or give me death.” I think that Patrick Henry’s speech represents civil disobedience because he told the people to fight for their rights rather than obey. -
Thomas Paine's "Common Sense"
• A 50 Page pamphlet titled Common Sense was published by Thomas Paine. The pamphlet encouraged independence throughout America. “Paine’s strong logic and powerful words inspired people in all the colonies.” I think that Paine’s pamphlet represents freedom because he was fighting for independence and separation from the British rule. His pamphlet started Virginia’s Resolution which is when Virginia authorized its delegates to support independence and take Paine’s case to congress. -
The Declaration of Independence
The Declaration of Independence is the official document declaring that the British colonies had finally broken all of their ties with Great Britain and become their own country. The Declaration of Independence was written by Thomas Jefferson but the points were first made by John Locke and the Continental philosophers. I think that the Declaration of Independence represents patriotism because the document was created out of love for our country and fighting as one for our independence. -
The Constitution of the United States of America
The Constitution is the document that set the new form of government for the United States of America. The Constitution defines the branches of government, the decisions that each branch can make creates rules for how each state would interact with each state. I think that the Constitution represents social contract because it was the legal document stating the new rules and restrictions for the United States of America. -
The Opening of Ellis Island
Ellis Island opened in 1892 as a federal immigration station. Ellis Island originally opened because all of Europe was under turmoil because so many people were moving from Europe trying to find a better life. I think that the opening of Ellis Island represents the American dream because the only reason the immigrants wanted to come to America was so that they can find a better life and to them, anything was possible in America. You can go from rags to riches. -
Plessy v. Ferguson
Homer Plessy was arrested for sitting in the whites only section of a railroad car because he was only one eighth African American. The court ruled in favor of the state, favoring segregation. I think that Plessy v. Ferguson represents civil disobedience because Homer Plessy sat in the whites only section knowing of the law with the intention of changing the law. -
Scopes Monkey Trial
John Scopes was a biology teacher in Tennessee, he taught the theory of evolution to his students. It was illegal in the state of Tennessee to teach Darwin’s theory. He was convicted and lost his job, from that point on, the law stayed but was rarely enforced. I think that the Scopes Monkey Trial represents separation of Church and State because the law in Tennessee was only enforced because the government deciding what would be taught would follow a religious path rather than a scientific one. -
Roosevelt D. Franklin's 'Four Freedoms' Speech
• Roosevelt rallied the American people to support the Europeans during World War II. The four freedoms represented what Roosevelt thought that Hitler had taken from the people of Europe and potentially the whole world. The four freedoms are freedom of speech and expression, the freedom to worship God in his own way, freedom from want and freedom from fear. I think that the ‘Four Freedoms Speech’ represents freedom because Roosevelt did not want to be stripped of his freedoms nor did he want any -
The Attack on Pearl Harbor
Just before 8 am on December 7 1941, tons of Japanese fighter planes attacked Pearl Harbor, an American Naval Base in Honolulu, Hawaii. Many sailors and soldiers were killed and injured. This is what made the US declare war on Japan and bring them into the World War II. I think that the attack on Pearl Harbor represents global standing because even though the US tried their hardest to stay out of the war, other countries brought the US in anyway. -
Brown v. Board of Education
Oliver Brown was forced to send his daughter to a segregated school that was to far from their home. Brown sued the board of education and took his case to court. I think that Brown v. Board of Education represents civil disobedience because when Brown took his daughter to the all white school he was disobeying the law to change an injustice to his daughter. -
Little Rock Nine
The little rock nine were nine African American students trying to attend Little Rock’s Central High School. After trying to attend their first day of school, they were ambushed and mobbed. After weeks of torment, President Eisenhower sent in federal troops for protection. I think that the Little Rock Nine fall under the category of equality v. equity because even though Little Rock as a state tried to reverse the segregation law, people still did not find everyone to be equal. -
9/11
On September eleventh 2001, the United States suffered of the worst terrorist attack in US history. New York City’s World Trade centers were crumbled to the ground by two hijacked airplanes, while another plane crashed into the Pentagon. I think that 9/11 represents global standing because the United States's global standing in the world differs from the terrorist’s beliefs, which is mos lokely why they attacked. -

Obama first speech as President shared his views on the economic problems of the US and the need for basic values to be shared across the US.
