1492-Christopher Columbus First Discovered The Americas
Christopher Columbus led three ships Nina, Pinta, and Santa Maria out of the Spanish port of Palos on August 3rd, 1492. His objective was to sail to Asia. After months of sailing, they found land on October 11th. Christopher thought that he sailed all the way to India, but that wasn't true. -

1519-Hernando Cortes Defeated The Aztecs
Hernando Cortes was a well known Spanish conquistador, most famous for conquering the Aztecs. Cortes ventured to Mexico and had heard of the Aztec's that were a primary source of power in Mexico.Tlaxcalans, were an enemy of the Aztecs and an ally to Cortes when they took Tenochtitlán. An outbreak of smallpox due to the diseases that the Spanish brought with them wiped out half of the population making it easy for the Spanish to wipe out the Aztecs and their empire fell. -
1620 Pilgrims arrived on Mayflower at Plymouth, MA
The Mayflower sailed from Plymouth, England, and was headed for Virginia. It contained about 102 passengers. Stormy weather and navigational errors drove the Mayflower off course. On November 21 the Pilgrims reached Massachusetts, where they found the first permanent European settlement in New England in late December. -
1664 New Amsterdam renamed to New York
Peter Stuyvesant the Dutch Governor, surrendered New Amsterdam, the capital of New Netherland, to Colonel Richard Nicolls. Stuyvesant had hoped to withstand the English, but he was an unpopular ruler, and his Dutch subjects refused to support him. Following its capture, New Amsterdam’s name was changed to New York, in honour of the Duke of York, who organised the mission. -
1744 King George's War began
King Gorge's War was dreadful extensive fire that swept over Europe at this time. On the death of Charles VI, emperor of Austria, in 1740, the male line of the House of Hapsburg became extinct. His eldest daughter, Maria Theresa, claimed the Austrian throne. France and England went on opposite sides, war being declared between them in the spring of 1744. -
1773 Boston Tea Party
In Boston Harbour, a group of colonists from Massachusetts were disguised as Red Indians, and boarded three British ships. The cargo in the ships were tea and they dump 342 chests of tea into the harbour. -
1789 George Washington elected first US president
On February 4th 1789, 69 members of Congress elected George Washington to be the first president of the United States. -
