Potato Famine in Ireland
The Potato Famine in Ireland occurs and infects most of the potatos in Ireland. Nora Brennan and her family, who live on a potato farm, are greatly affected by this. After things start to take a turn for the worst, the Brennan family decides to leave Ireland, and head to America, which they heard had lots of money-earning opportunities, as well as land for sale. -
I leave for America
My mother and father left for America about a month ago. By now they should have found a nice place and nice jobs for themselves. Since they were too old to survive the harsh conditions here in Ireland as a result of the Potato Famine, they left before us to secure some property and jobs. Me and my brother were left to sell our farm and earn enough money from it to support out family until we find jobs of our own. Today is they day we sold our ranch and now we are off to America! -
Ellis Island
Today, my brother and I arrived at Ellis Island. it is quite crowded here, and there are so many people shouting in languages foreign to me. I am quite lost here. But i just follow my older brother and do what he says. When we take the medical exam, an old man yells at my brother in italian, He's jumping and signaling my brother to do the same, but he cannot; he broke his leg a week ago, and now he is unable to pass the exam. The doctor tells him to go to quarentine. And stay there. Forever. -
City Life
After leaving Ellis Island, I immediately traveled to New York to find my parents. Without Brother, which we were counting on to be our main source of income, we would need to work much harder to pay for our house. Eventually, we found a clothing factory that would employ us. The pay is small and the work hours are too long, which doesn't bode well for us. I think we will have to live in a tenement soon. Although, living in an appartment crammed with people of all health statuses is not ideal. -
Move West
After we left the tenements, we went and bought a wagon for our family. We would be traveling to Idaho with a few other families that we had met in the tenements. -
Get Lost in Wyoming
We were traveling through the plains on Wyoming when we realized that the landscape looked frighteningly familiar; we were walking in cirlces. Continuing to walk towards Idaho, which was out final destination, we became even more lost. Eventually, we just sat down and thought about our options. At one point, three Native Americans approached us. We were scared at first, but realized that they meant us no harm. -
Arriving in Idaho
After the Native Americans approached us on March 24th, they tried to communicate with us without even knowing our language. Eventually, we had to draw pictures in the dirt for them to understand that we were lost. Forunately, one of them knew a few words of English. We kept saying "west".They eventually guided us west, which brought us to Idaho. After we thanked the Native Americans, they left, leaving us to find our land. Now, more than a month later, we are living on 20 acres of land in Idaho.
