MUD
The earliest form of multiplayer games was debuted- The precursor to World of Warcraft and Second Life was developed in 1979, and was called MUD (short for MultiUser Dungeon). MUDs were entirely text-based virtual worlds, combining elements of role-playing games, interactive, fiction, and online chat. -

The first emoticon was used While many people credit Kevin MacKenzie with the invention of the emoticon in 1979, it was Scott Fahlman in 1982 who proposed using :-) after a joke, rather than the original -) proposed by MacKenzie. -
The domain name system was created
The first Domain Name Servers (DNS) was created. The domain name system was important in that it made addresses on the Internet more human-friendly compared to its numerical IP address counterparts. DNS servers allowed Internet users to type in an easy-to-remember domain name and then converted it to the IP address automatically. -
World Wide Web protocols finished
The code for the World Wide Web was written by Tim Berners-Lee, based on his proposal from the year before, along with the standards for HTML, HTTP, and URLs. -

1991 brought some major innovations to the world of the Internet. The first web page was created and, much like the first email explained what email was, its purpose was to explain what the World Wide Web was. -
Steam is made
The iconic game hub Steam is released. It is a program that allows you to download games uploaded to it, sometimes for money, sometimes for free. Today it is known by gamers every where. It was made by Valve Corporation. -
Unity is created
Unity is a cross-platform game engine developed by Unity Technologies, which is primarily used to develop video games and simulations for computers, consoles and mobile devices. First announced only for OS X, at Apple's Worldwide Developers Conference in 2005, it has since been extended to target 27 platforms.

Lotro Comes Out
Turbine Inc. officially releases the Lord of The Rings Online game. It is played on Microsoft Windows and OS X. Now managed by Sanding Stone games, it is currently one of my favorite multiplayer games.

Minecraft is made
Minecraft is probably one of the most iconic games ever made. It has gone through many updates and many different versions. It was made by Marcus "Notch" Persson, a Swedish game designer. In September 2014, it and Mojang, the company that fully developed an published the game, were bought by Microsoft.

Oculus Rift is released
The now popular virtual reality headset is released to people around the world. It was made by Oculus VR, but was bought by Facebook shortly after. Now, instead of being just the headset, it comes with a set of Oculus Touch motion controls, which let people interact with their surroundings in the games.

Overwatch is made
The popular game Overwatch is made by Blizzard Entertainment. It is one of their numerous and very popular games. It is a team based fighting game where you can choose who you want to be out of a variety of different characters. -
Starbound comes out
Starbound was released out of early access in July 2016 for Microsoft Windows, OS X, and Linux, and is in development for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation Vita. People claim that it is a rip off of Tereria, but I can confidently say that it isn't, and that it is even a small bit better. Currently it is one of my favorite games.
