    Elie and Moishe the Beadle, 1941
    Elie met Moishe the Beable, when he was 13 years old. They met in the year 1941, while praying in synagogue. Moishe the Beable was a very quiet person. A poor, foreign person that lives in the town of Sighet. Elie wanted to learn more about Mosihe the Beadle religion.

    Moishe the Beadle went from jewish house to another trying to tell his story, no one believes him and think he was imagining things. He no longer talks either god or Kabbalah.
  • Yellow star

    All Jews were forced to wear a yellow star. The Germans made two ghettos in the town. They were separated by barbed wire. Elie's house was on the other ghetto had to be closed off. Everyone thought they would remain in the ghetto until the war was over.
  • Jews taken from Sighet

    Jews taken from Sighet
    The Jews were taking from Sighet and were put in cattle cars, and this included Moishe the Beadle. After they were taken, the town went back to living a normal life. When Moishe return he said that they were sent to the forest to dig a French and they were killed. Moishe was abe to return because he was shot in the leg and survived.

    The news in 1944 were saying that there was going to be a second front, when Moishe the Beadle was listening to that he stays quiet.
  • Elie and his family leave the town

    Elie and his family leave the town
    It was Elie and his family turn to leave. The Hungarian police ordered them to leave, pushing them, and making them run.
    This is the first time he saw his dad cry, his mom didn't say anything, and his sister knew it was not worth crying when they reached their destination, they dropped to the ground.
  • Sabbath

    the day of rest, Sabbath, was when they were all evacuated to the Synagogue. They spent the day there and the next day were taken to the cattle cars. They were given a few pieces of bread and pails of water. one person per car was put in charge. If anyone tried to escape, they would be shot.
  • Schachter

    Mrs. Schächter, like Moishe, is another prophet-like character. She is a middle-aged woman who goes crazy after she's separated from her husband and packed into a cattle car headed to Auschwitz. The people in the train car can't take the sound of the women's screams anymore so a couple men forced her to sit and gagged her until she was quiet.
  • Buna in 1944

    Back in Buna in 1944, Idek goes crazy again and beats Eliezer’s dad this time. Eliezer reflects on how inhumane the concentration camps made him; as his father is being beaten, rather than being mad at Idek, Eliezer is mad at his father for not avoiding the Kapo.
  • Jews and the Germans

    Jews and the Germans
    The Jews first impression of the Germans was that they were likeable. The germans are staying in the houses of some of the Jewish families.
    During the 8 days of passover, the Jews went to the Rabbi's houses because the Synagogues were closed.
    At the end of passover, the Germans arrested all of the religious leaders. All Jews were on house arrest for three days and could not keep any valuables.
  • Hungary

    There were some rumors that they were taking them to a place called Hungary to work, they told the Jews that they have to pack their things for personal care (clothes, foos, shoes, etc). An inspector of the Hungarian police knock he said that he would tell them when they will be in danger.
  • "Left and Right"

    "Men to the left" "Women to the right". Prisoners were forced to separated from their family. Elie was separated from his mom and sisters. He never saw them again.
  • Gold Crown

    Franek wanted Elie's gold crown. Elie's father told him not to give it to him, so Franek would hit his father because he could not march in step. Elie ended up having to give up his tooth and a ration of bread. Two weeks later they moved to another camp, so he lost his Gold Crown for nothing.
  • Elie's father died

    The block leader tells Eliezer that he should stop taking care of his father here in the concentration camps, it’s every man for himself. Eliezer feels guilty that he even considers this. In the morning, his father’s body is gone. Eliezer hopes that his father wasn’t taken to the crematorium before he stopped breathing. Eliezer goes to bed. In the morning, his father’s body is gone.     Elie's mother was having a bad feeling because she saw two German Officers, nad since they've been there, they have not seen an officer. everyone was scared, no one wanted to sleep, people were leaving and when his father came back they were asking him what were going on, and he just said that it was terrible news.
