    Nigeria: Nigerian Independence Day
    Nigeria was granted independence on October 1st, 1960 (proclamation of independence) as the Federation of Nigeria. Nnamdi Azikwe became the Governor-General of Nigeria. This is important because it was the day where Nigeria publicly announced that they were independent of the British Empire. The proclamation of independence is now a public holiday in Nigeria referred to as Nigerian Independence Day, it is celebrated all over Nigeria.

    U.S: Cuban Missile Crisis
    The Cuban Missile Crisis was a 13-day war between the United States and the Soviet Union because of the installation of nuclear-armed Soviet missiles in Cuba. President Kennedy informed the Americans about the missiles and citizens were scared there was going to be a nuclear war. This was solved when Nikita Khrushchev offered to remove the Cuban missiles in exchange or America not invading Cuba. This is important because this was the closest the Cold war came to becoming a nuclear war.

    U.S.: President Johnson signed the Voting Rights Act
    This was a very important day in history because it was a big step towards race equality. This was the day when President Johnson guaranteed African- Americans the right to vote. The Voting Rights Act made it illegal to stop black people from voting. The number of black people voting increased from 6 percent in 1964 to 59 percent in 1969.

    Nigeria: Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu declared Biafra as an independent republic
    Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu was a politician and a military man who declared Biafra as an independent republic in 1967. He became the leader of Biafra (Eastern Nigeria). This was important because it marked the beginning of the Nigerian CIvil war (Nigerian-Biafran War) which killed over 500,000 people.

    U.S.: Jimmy Carter is inaugurated as the 39th president
    Jimmy Earl Carter Jr is an American politician and was the 39th President of The United States, he was also a member of the Democratic Party. He was inaugurated on January 20th, 1977. He was an important president who won multiple awards and improved the US is many ways.

    Nigeria: Murtala Mohammed's Assassination
    Murtala Mohmed was a military ruler in Nigeria from 1936 till the day he died. He died by assassination on February 13th 1976. He was assassinated by the henchmen of Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka in an abortive military group. This was important because Murtala Mohammed was a very important Military Ruler who was involved in the civil war.

    Nigeria: Obasanjo
    Obasanjo born March 5th, 1937 in Abeokuta, Nigeria was the first President to rule Nigeria after Nigeria returned to democratic rule. He was also a military leader as well. Obasonjo was the first Nigerian to be a demoratic elected official as well as a military leader. Today's leaders go to him for political advice, he has become an icon in Nigeria’s political world.

    U.S.: Senate acquits Clinton of impeachment charges
    On February 13th, 1999 President Clinton was freed from impeachment charges (for sexual misconduct). After a five week long Senate trial of the President, 55 voted “not guilty” and 45 voted “guilty”. This was important because Clinton was only the second President to be on trial after a 210 years history of the Republic.

    Nigeria: Nigeria returned to democratic rule
    May 29th was the official democracy day up until June, 2018. May 29th, 2019 marks the day that the military handed overrule to an elected citizen, Obasanjo. This was an important day because it marked the day that Nigeria started using democracy consistently.
  • U.S.: 9/11

    U.S.: 9/11
    9/11 was four coordinated plane attacks and suicide attacks by Al-Qaeda in the United States. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center’s twin towers in New York City. One crashed into the Pentagon outside Washington, District of Columbia. The last one crashed in a field in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. This event was important because it killed over 3,000 people.

    U.S.: President Trump Officially Declares A National Emergency
    On February 15th, 2019 President Trump declared a national emergency on Mexicos border because he wanted to be able to access some money to build a wall that the congress refused to give to him. He announced this in a 50-minute talk where he talked about a bunch of different topics. The declaration allows President Trump to access a total of about 8 billion dollars. This is important because it caused a conflict between the branches of government.

    Nigeria: Nigerian 2019 elections
    This was the general Nigerian election mainly between PDP (Atiku Abubakar) and APC (Muhameedu Buhari), Buhari won at the end. The presidential election was originally supposed to be held on February 16th but was postponed to February 23rd just a few hours before the date of the presidential elections. The state elections were also postponed mt one week. This was important because it caused people to suspect that the election was rigged and to suspect that it wasn't a fair election.
