  • Period: to

    Slave Trade

Europeans established ports for slave trafficking. Millions of Nigerians are forcibly sent to the Americas and parts of Europe. This clearly had a negative effect on culture because the ones forced into the slave trade because more often than not, they were forced to completly abandon their culture
  • Period: to

    Yorubaland Civil Wars

There had been a series of civil wars in Nigeria, that most likely stemmed from the difference of opinion and cultural tension between the many cultures in Nigeria. This had a negative effect on the Nigerian culture because it ultimately set them up for colonization, and once they were colonized, It's around this time when Britain capitalized on colonizing part, and later on in time the rest of Nigeria. , they lost grasp of control of what they did, and were forced to follow new cultural norms.
  • Abolition Of Slavery

The Abolition of Slave Trade Act was passed by Parliament in 1807. This act taxed captains of slave ships for each slave they transported. The Slavery Abolition Act freed all slaves in the British Empire.
  • European Invasion

Shortly after a big meeting with many european powers in berlin called the berlin conference, the british invades nigeria to capitalize on their, "colonial possesions".
  • Lagos Annexed

Lagos was annexed after becoming a British Colony. This didnt hav emuch of a cultural influence
  • Period: to

    British Expansion

The European superpower, Britain, later had a complete hold of most that was Nigerian. They named it The Colony and Protectorate of Nigeria, which was governed through local representatives and leaders of the British regime. This had a more or less neutral effect in terms of positive and negative impact, but in my personal opinion, it created another nationality for Nigerians to follow suit, further disconnecting some from their culture
  • Nigeria's Etemology

British Journalist Flora Shaw, later wife of Lord Frederick Lugard, suggests the name "Nigeria" after the great Niger River. This made a cultural change (positive) that would last to present day
  • Complete British Takeover

At this point in time, Great Britain has entirely colonized current day Nigeria. This had a negative effect because there was no part of Nigeria no longer in control of their own cultural lifestyle
  • The Royal Colony of Nigeria

The Protectorates of Northern and Southern Nigeria unite to form the Royal Colony of Nigeria. There was no real effect, but more so just a mix of the new assimilation of culture between the two altered protectorates.
  • Nigerian Liberation

Britain passes Nigerian Constitution, liberating the country of British sovereignty. This had a positive effect on nigerian culture because ethey were nolonger beign bombarded by forien culture. sadly though, this didnt restore the damage alredy done.
