The Great Migration was the mass movement of about five million southern blacks to the north and west between 1915 and 1960. It is significant because it helped them while they were riven from their homes by unsatisfactory economic opportunities and harsh segregationist laws, many blacks headed north, where they took advantage of the need for industrial workers that first arose during the First World War. -
