Abraham Lincoln was running against candidate John C. Breckinridge and won by 180 electoral votes, making him the 16th president of the United States. -
Battle of Fort Sumter

The Battle of Fort Sumter became the first issue for president Abraham Lincoln because of resupplying ships for the Union. He also called many volunteers to block the rebellion which resulted to an additional four states announcing their succession and joining the Confederates, which begun the Civil War. -
Abraham's First Inaugural Speech
This speech was part of Lincoln's oath of office for his first term as the 16th President of the United States. It was mainly addressed to the South, and was intended to pass on his policies toward that section, where seven states had split from the Union and formed the Confederate States of America. -
Union Blockade
During the Civil War, Lincoln with only 42 ships orders a blockade of Confederate ports that will eventually weaken the Confederacy by stopping the importation of supplies. -
Homestead Act
During Lincoln's presidency, this act was passed which allowed homesteaders to gain possesion of 160 acres of land after living in it for 5 years. This populated the Great Plains. -
Emancipation Proclamation
This order was put in effect after the Union victory at the Battle of Antietam. It stated that the president had the right to seize the property of anyone against the State, and only freed slaves in Southern states where Lincoln had no control over them. -
Gettysburg Address
This was considered one of the best speeches in American- history which was delivered during the Civil War. It talked about how all humans are equal and brought up the Declaration of Independence as well. It is one of the shortest speeches in history. -
Thirteenth Amendment approved
Lincoln influenced the House of Representatives and they approved the 13th amendment. This amendment calls for the emancipation of all slaves. -
Abraham's Second Inaugural Speech
Lincoln delivered this speech within the days slavery was reaching an end. He spoke about the sadness and about his main goal, which was lasting peace among ourselves. -
Assassination
John Wilkes Booth shot Lincoln at Ford's Theater in Washington D.C. He had planned the whole thing before, therefore Abraham Lincoln became the first president to be assassinated.
