Birth and Early Childhood
Life was rough in Germany as a child. I had many strict orders as a child. There was school, chores, supper, prayer time, and finally bedtime. This occured every single day. Our family didn't have enough money to survive, and the German Revolution was becoming very rough. We came to America hoping for new job opportunities and extra money. From this, I want people to learn about my exciting journey to and in America. -
Journey to America and Statue of Liberty Sighting
Crowded. Smelly. Rough. These words all describe the embarkment to America. I boarded the boat with my husband, John, and son, Peter. I was afraid to leave with my family because I wasn't sure if the boat ride would be safe. As a thirty year old woman, I now knew I needed to get over this. The sight of the Statue of Liberty erased all of these thoughts! It was huge! This is a perfect entrance to Ellis Island. The statue resembles liberty, and I can easily see it throughout the torch she holds. -
Going throughout Ellis Island
As second class passengers on our boat, we had to wait an extra day to go to Ellis Island because there were numerous first class passengers. My family and I got through inspection quickly. They sent her to a doctor to be treated. Next, I went through more inspections. It took a very long time because of all the other immigrants. There were many from my country, Britain, Ireland, and Scandanavian counrties. I then went to change money, and to find a dorm to sleep in overnight before we settle in -
Living and Work
My job as a factory worker is going very well. I work from 6 am to 9 pm. It is very dangerous because the machines can cut your fingers off, fires can start with in the dry atmosphere, and we have been robbed. My boss is kind to me becuase I am a determined, hard worker. My living conditions are also very nice. My husband and son built a one-story house in a town outside of New York City. -
Our Robbery!
I have just been robbed! My entire family was outside of our homes doing work. When we came home, everything was torn apart! We headed over to the police station, and they sent out a search for possible suspects. They found out who he was. His name is Robert Finley Jr. He is going to get his mugshot taken today. That is a new term to me because it is new technology over here. In Germany, there was no such technology. -
The Civil War Begins
My family would constantly contribute to the Union War effort. We did not believe in slavery, and wished for racism to end. All people are created equally, and should be treated that way. Sadly enough my husband and son were drafted to the Union Army. They were in need of more soilders after the loss of some recent battles. However, soon after they were drafted, they were both killed. I live at home alone, missing them dearly each day. Some of my dear friends come and visit me to make me happy.
