My Education Journey

  • Day 1

    Day 1
I was born June 22. Later I became the oldest sibling to two sisters and a younger brother. My dad worked overseas on drilling rigs and my mom, a teacher, was fortunate enough to be able to stay home with the four of us. From a young age my parents instilled in us a love of reading, learning and the outdoors.
  • I'm a Kinder!

    I'm a Kinder!
I started school at Steffie Woima Elementary in Sylvan Lake. I was part of the Tuesday & Thursday class. I've loved school since day one and have many fond kindergarten memories including making stone soup, reading Brown Bear, Brown Bear and looking after our hermit crab Sheldon. I've always been fiercely independent and sat my parents down week two to explain to them that I no longer required them to take me to school and that I would be biking on my own.
  • My Favourite Year

    My Favourite Year
Grade 7 was my favourite year of school. I had an incredible teacher who funny, engaging and had a genuine relationship with all of us. I enjoyed time with friends and played every school sport I could. Not only did I learn a lot that year but I laughed every single day.
  • Coach Kate

    Coach Kate
For many years I was a competitive freestyle skier. In 2010 I retired and decided to take on a volunteer coaching position. From there I moved into a paid position and eventually became the program coordinator and head coach. I program plan, event coordinate and coach 9-14 year old athletes twice a week. Together we set skiing and attitude goals and work safely to accomplish them. I really enjoy seeing them push themselves, support each other, gain confidence and learn valuable life skills.
  • High School Graduation

    High School Graduation
High school graduation was an exciting day for me. I was proud of my accomplishments and excited for the future. I didn't know exactly what I was going to do but I always knew I wanted to attend university and keep learning.
  • Kinesiology at RDC

    Kinesiology at RDC
After graduating from high school I took a year of kinesiology at Red Deer College. I took some really interesting classes about movement, physical fitness, adapted physical education, leadership and dance. I also made some amazing new friends and tried new things like playing in the campus recreation volleyball league.
  • Work Experience

    Work Experience
After a year of college I decided to take some time off to work and travel. I was fortunate enough to be offered a great job in the oil and gas sector. Over 5 years I worked my way from a document control admin up to the manager of the quality and health and safety departments. I successfully led the company through many audits and helped them obtain an API quality designation. When I returned to school they offered me a part time position which I kept while attending school.
  • Adventures in Asia

    Adventures in Asia
In 2014 I decided it was time for a change. I resigned from my job and bought a one way ticket to Bangkok. I spent 3 months abroad and learned more than I ever thought possible. I got to see new things, have experiences I wouldn't have dreamt of and meet some of the most inspirational people. During this journey I did a lot of self reflection and realized what I ultimately wanted to do was to teach.
  • Middle Years Acceptance

    Middle Years Acceptance
March 11, 2016 was a great day. I was officially offered early acceptance into the collaborative Middle Years program. I had set this goal for myself and worked very hard to meet the course and GPA requirements. It was exciting that my hard work had paid off and I was one step closer to becoming a teacher.
  • IFX Practicum

    IFX Practicum
My 5 week IFX practicum was at St. Francis of Assisi Middle School in Red Deer. I primarily taught grade 6 math as well as some science, math enrichment, gym and technology options. I really enjoyed being in a classroom especially forming relationships with the students. Throughout my IFX I learned a ton from my mentor teacher and from my students.
  • AFX Practicum

    AFX Practicum
I'm completing my AFX practicum at Ermineskin Jr. Sr. High School in Maskwacis. As a Canadian and future teacher I believe it is my duty to continue educating myself on Indigenous ways of life. I recognize and respect the travesties of the past however I am hopeful and determined to help carve a better future. I believe one of the most powerful tools to do this is education. Through this practicum I want to increase my knowledge and understanding so I am a fit individual to aide in this process.
