The Election of Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln was elected president with no Southern states in the ballot for him. The election was one of the main reasons why the civil war broke out. Lincoln’s decision to fight was not based on his feelings towards slavery. He felt it was his duty as President of the United States to preserve the Union at all costs. -

This was a government created by 11 states of the United States. They were part of the South in the U.S. The Union did not want to recognize the Confederates. These Southern states also left the Union. -
First Battle of Bull Run

Second Battle of Bull Run

Results: The Confederates won
Significance: This battle has many different names; Manassas, Second Bull Run, Manassas Plains, Groveton, Gainesville, Brawner's Farm. It ended up sacking the Union commander, and the re-instating of McLellan, to the joy of the troops.

Battle of Antietam

Significance: This battle has another name for it, which is SHarpsburg. This battle gave the chance for Abraham Lincoln to issue his Imancipation Proclimation.

This document was actually issued by Abraham Lincoln two times. This only was toward the states that were rebelling against it. This also demonstartes the president's war executive powers. This document did change the focus on the war. -

Significance: Gettysburg was the first battle fought in a free state, and it was seen as a way of moving the war into the North. -
Battle of Fort Wagner

Fort Sumter
Location: City of Charleston

Significance: Birg. Gen. Beauregard demanded that the Union garrison to surrender Fort Sumter in Charleston Harbor. Garrison commander Anderson refused. At 2:30 pm, April 13, Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter. This started the American Civil War.

Abraham's re-election

In 1864, Lincoln ran again for President. He thought that he wouldn't win this time again. He secretly made plans to retain the White House and bring the conflict to a conclusion of the results of the election. His goal, he said, was “lasting peace among ourselves. 1 Month later the war ended. -

The Assassination of Abraham Lincoln

He was assassinated in the Ford's Theatre in Washington D.C. He was assassinated by John Wilkes Booth. At first Abraham was injuried serverely. One day later though he ended up dying.
