The Journey to America
Life in China is hard because I am poor and struggling. I have decided to move to America to seek fortune from the mines in the West. My hope is that this will bring me a better life. -
Period: to
Moving West
-
Discrimination
My close friend Jackie Lee and I have been facing racism and discrimination from other white immigrants. The trip to America so far has been very tough. -
The Fight
An Irish immigrant made some racist comments towards Jackie and I. I couldn’t stand it anymore so I got into a fight with him and beat him up. -
Separated
After the fight, security came and took us away. Security let me go the next day but I was separated from my close friend. -
Moving West
My reasons for moving west are to seek fortune by mining for gold and silver. Hopefully luck will be on my side so I will strike fortune. -
Racism
I faced much racism from fellow white miners. I am much luckier than other Chinese miners because I have not yet been attacked. -
Reunited
I was getting ready for another day in the mines when I saw my friend Jackie. This was the first sign of luck that I have gotten so far while in the west. -
Violence
I have witnessed horrible things during my mining experiences. Some Chinese miners were assaulted and brutally beaten by other miners. -
End of the Journey
It has been one year since my decision to Journey to America. I now am very wealthy because I struck gold. I now live in Oklahoma and own and share many acres of land with my old friend Jackie Lee.
