    A School for Mentally Retarded Children
    An educator named Edouard Seguin established a private school in Paris for children with mental retardation. The school consisted or roughly 30 students. At this school, Edouard Seguin implemented the techniques taught to him by another educator named Jean Marc Gaspard Itard which focused on sensory and motor development. The creation of this private school influenced other educators worldwide to establish schools for students with disabilities (Wood, 2006, p 5).

    Brown v. Board of Education
    The Supreme Court case Brown v. Board of Education had a major impact on segregation of students. During this time, public schools were segregated into different schools for black students and white students. The court ruled that creating separate schools for blacks and whites was unconstitutional.     Rehabilitation Act Amendment of 1973 Section 504
    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 focuses on providing the first civil rights protection to individuals with disabilities. It states that these students have the right to an education and that no student with a disability can be excluded from or denied benefits of any program receiving financial assistance. Section 504 also states that recipients of federal funding are required to provide free appropriate public education (FAPE)to the qualified persons with disabilities (Wood, 2006

    Education for All Handicap Children Act
    The Education for All Handicap Children Act (EAHCA) requires that children with disabilities have access to public schools. Each state must follow certain guidelines established by this act if they are to receive federal funding assistance. The main components of the EAHCA are: special education, related services, due process, zero reject, and free appropriate public education (FAPE), and least restrictive environment (Wood, 2006, pg. 8-9)

    EAHCA Amendment Part C
    Part C was created in the Education for All Handicap Children Act (EAHCA). This changed caused the establishment of two programs, Early Intervention Program for Infants and Toddlers with Disabilities and the Early Childhood Special Education for children ages 3 to 5 (Wood, 2006, pg. 9-11).
  • Americans with Disabilities Act

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 had a major impact on what rights of people with disabilities. This act states that a person with disabilities cannot be discriminated against in areas such as hiring, termination, recruitment, and advancement. This act also states that schools must be handicap accessible and that services provided by schools must be delivered to students with disabilities in integrated settings that are appropriate to their needs (Wood, 2006, p. 19).
  • No Child Left Behind

    No Child Left Behind
    This Act established new requirements for states to develop standards for grades 3 through 8 in academic areas such as reading/language arts, science, and mathematics. It also included the implementation of annual assessments related to those standards. No Child Left Behind (NCLB) reinforces the inclusion of children with disabilities in state and district wide testing (Wood, 2006, pg 19-20).
