  Michelangelo was born in Caprese near Florence where his father was the local magistrate

  In 1488 he was apprenticed to the painter Domenico Ghirlandaio. Michelangelo then lived in the leading patron of arts in Florence, the household of Lorenzo de' Medici

  He travelled to Bologna and then to Rome after the Medici were expelled from Florence
