    Philip Nolan arrested in Texas.
    Philip Nolan planned to travel to Texas beginning in 1790. He wanted to capture mustangs and then return them to Louisiana to sell. It was thought to be a very successful business plan. After coming to Texas several times, the Spanish officials became suspicious he was doing something with the army. He was arrested in 1800. He returned later on to Texas, but died in a fight with Spanish soldiers.
  • Father Hildago leads revolution

    Father Hildago leads revolution
    Father Hildago was a Catholic priest from the town ow Dolores, Guananjauto. He worked to organize the people of the town together and taught them how to work the land to survive with farming. Father Hildago joined witha group who were against Spain's dominance of Mexico. They decided to start a revolution on September 16, 1810.
  • Gutierrez-Magee Expedition

    Gutierrez-Magee Expedition
    Jose Gutierrez de Lara was a diplomat from Mexico. He and his brother had been successful in a previous revolution in Mexico. He later met with representatives in Washington and made plans for liberating Texas and Mexico. In March 1812, he returned to Texas with the help of a special US agent. His expedition into Texas is called the Gutierrez-Magee Expedition but ended in a bloody battle with the Spanish army on August 18,1813.
  • Augustus Magee

    Augustus Magee
    Augustus Magee was a former army officer in the United States Army. He resigned from the US Army when he was not promoted and recruited a group to lead the Guiterriez-Magee Expedition. This group entered into Nacogdoches on August 12, 1812. Their group did occupy Trinidad, but Magee became very sick and later died in 1813.

    The Battle of Medina was fought between the Spanish army and he Gutierriez-Magee Expedition. It was fought twenty miles south of San Antonio. THe Spanish troops defeated the Republican forces in a hot, tiring and bloody battle.

    General Mier y Teran
    Mier y Teran leads an expedition into Texas. He was sent by the Mexican President for several reasons. He was supposed to report about the state of the INdians, the number of American settlers and also mark the line between the United States and Mexico which was established by the Adams-Onis Treaty.

    This law opened Texas to being able to set up colonies. They gave contracts from an empresario to people. This was designed to encourage settling in Texas. They also hoped it would it would stimulate economic growth.
  • Dr. James Long is killed after trying to claim Texas

    Dr. James Long is killed after trying to claim Texas
    Dr. Long gathered a group and led his first expedition to Texas in 1819 (exact date unknown). Their goal was to conquer Texas. He came from Vicksburg, MS with his group of prominent citizens to fight. However, he surrendered and was imprisoned in San Antonio and Mexico. He was shot in March 1822 and killed by a prison guard. His wife later came back to Texas and set up her home here.

    Stephen F. Austin settles 300 families in Texas
    STephen F. Austin has a contract with Mexico to settle families in Texas. He is allowed to bring 300 families, which become known as the "Old Three Hundred". They settle in the area near the Brazos River.
  • Constitution of 1824

    Constitution of 1824
    The Mexican government writes the Constitution of 1824 which is based on the US Constitution. The constitution explains how the national government woulc work with the states to give them power. It also had some parts in it that were similiar to the Spanish Constitution of 1812. Texas and Coahuila are joined together in a single state in this Constitution.

    Stephen F. Austin makes San Felipe de Austin his headquarters. This is near the west bank of the Brazos River.
  • Law of April 6, 1830

    Law of April 6, 1830
    General Mier y Teran issued his report regarding the status of the settlers in Texas. Teran gave recommendations for laws to be put into place in Texas. These laws were passed on April 6, 1830 by Mexico's president. This banned anyone else from the US to immigrate to Texas.
