    Texas Independence
    The battle of San Jacinto was the main factor that decided if Texas became independent. They won the battle and General Santa Ana signed a treaty which recognized Texas as independent. In addition it claimed that the border was at the Rio Grande.
  • The Loredo Incident

    The Loredo Incident
    Mexican sloiders seized San Antonio North from the Nueces River. In response, a group of Anglos Texans raided Loredo on the Rio Grande and some further into Mexico. After Mexican forces captured them they killed every 10th men.
  • U.S. Opposes Texas Admission

    U.S. Opposes Texas Admission
    President Jackson did not want to risk a war with Mexico. In addition, it would cause conflict with North U.S states due to the imbalance of slave states.
  • Annexation Crisis

    Annexation Crisis
    After the Loredo Incident, Texas started signing treaties with Great Britain, which then "challenged" the United States. In 1845 the U.S. ignored the Adams Onis treaty and voted to annex Texas.
  • The "Offer"

    The "Offer"
    After all the problems Polk had with Mexico he hoped that they would negotiate the Texas/Mexican border. He then offered Mexico money for New Mexico, and California. This "Offer" was a red flag that the United States was hungry for more land.
