Texas became the Northern most province of Mexico. -

Mexican government abolished slavery, but it was difficult to enforce. -
1830
The Mexican government prohibited further immigration from the U.S. -
1835
The Anglo population increased to over 30,000 with 2,000 slaves. The Mexicn population was only 5,000. -

Settlers rebelled. -
April 1836
Texas was granted independence because Santa Anna was captured at the Battle of San Jacinto. -
1845
John Tyler pushed through congress a resolution annexing Texas in his final three days of presiency. -
March 1846
President Polk stationed general Zachery Taylor in territory along the Rio Grande with an army of 4,000 troops. -
April 25 1846
Mexican army crossed the Rio Grande and killed or wounded 16 of Taylor's men. -
May 9th 1846
Slidell returned to Washington and informed Polk that he was rebuffed. -
May 11 1846
Polk submitted his war message claiming "American blood was shed on American soil".
