    General Mariano Arista led a patrol of troops to fire and kill American soldiers that illegaly crossed the Nueces river ending up in Mexican territory. Arista viewed it as an act of invasion.

    President Polk declares war on Mexico because of their refusal to follow the doctrine (gained from the Alamo battle) that the river Nueces were soldiers were marching was considered American Soil.
