Metal Gear main series releases

  • Metal Gear

Metal Gear was released for the MSX2. It was developed as a stealth game because of hardware limitations at the time: having too many enemies on screen made action slow, so gameplay was made to focus on avoiding combat instead.
  • Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

A direct sequel to MG1, the game established many of the gameplay elements that would transition into the 3D games to be released over the next 2 decades.
  • Metal Gear Solid

The first 3D game in the series, took everything from MG2 and expanded on it in the new 3D spaces available on the Playstation.
  • Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

The first game on the Playstation 2
  • Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

A prequel to all previously released games, it added new mechanics and is set in a Cold War setting.
  • Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

Set in the (then) future, it is the "conclusion" to the overarching story arc.
  • Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

Set in Costa Rica in 1974
  • Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes

MGSV part 1. Released as a short prologue to the full MGSV game under pressure of the publishing studio.
  • Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The "full" release of MGSV, set in 1984. Series creator Hideo Kojima left the series after the release after decades with the company.
