Before the 20th century, many people couldn’t afford prosthetics so they would make their own from chair and table legs. AKA “Peg leg” Advanced to highly specialized prosthetics. Now there are sensors and microprocessors. 3-D printing became a new thing in the 2000’s which might lead to new prosthetics. -
HIV Cocktail
A “HIV Cocktail” is a combination drug treatment known as active antiretroviral therapy. It’s a pill that has many others in it. -
Anti - smoking laws
The # of states with laws that prohibit smoking inside restaurants and work sites increased from 0 to 26 from 2000 to 2010. Most southern states haven’t made that law yet. Helps smokers try to quit and discourages kids from ever starting to smoke. -
Stem cell research
In August 25th of 2000 the NIH guidelines for research using human stem cells begin. In 2005 Congress passes the stem cell research enhancement act On Feb 13th, 2012 the first ever stem cell transplant was successful on a heart attack patient to help regrow new heart tissue. -

The first robot assisted surgical procedure was recorded in 1985.
The da Vinci Surgery System became known in 2000 as it was the first ever robotic surgery system FDA approved.
Provides services for urology, general, and thoracoscopically assisted cardiotomy procedures. Soon these robots will be doing almost every surgery out there. -

Molecular breast imaging
A test that uses a radioactive tracer and special camera to find breast cancer. The pictures it creates show differences in the activity of the issue. Tissue with the cancer cells appear brighter than less active tissue. “Began” in 2010. -
Health tracker apps
Sweatcoin, Better Me, Sweat: Kayla Fitness, Etc. are some of the health tracking apps that we have today. A lot of people use these apps daily at home or at the gym. Health tracking apps have evolved with technology throughout the 21st century. There are now smart watches which some apps connect to, to provide the most accurate information. -
Immunotherapy for cancer
The survival of patients with cancer has gone up slightly over the past year because of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Immunotherapy stimulates your own immune system to work harder to attack cancer. Provides man-made immune system proteins. -
Face Transplant
The first transplant in the united states was recorded on April 2nd, 2011. A face transplant is an option to patients who have severe facial deformities. Replaces all or some of a person’s face with a deceased donor’s tissue. Takes months to plan and multiple surgical teams, also takes many hours to complete. -
Artificial liver
Noninvasive procedure using pig liver to filter the patients’ blood similar as kidney dialysis without removing waste. No surgery needed and the donor liver that the artificial liver recipient would have received goes to another patient needing that organ.
