Birth
Born in the small town of Pohandar, his family were vaisyans, in the jati of grocers.Son of Karamchand and Putliabi Gandhi. -
British and South African years
He went to Englands inner temple in the year of 1891 to study law, much to the dismay of his mother and his caste leaders.
His education became the stepping stone for which he used to advocate equal rights in SA (1893) - before many months were out he stood forth as the champion of indian rights in Natal. -
The founding of his method
In 1907 the parliament enacted a law requiering all asiatics to carry registration cards at all times. A law which Gandhi (among others) opposed.
It was during this resistance Gandhi concieved the passive resistance.
As the name passive resistance was considered to be inadequate, he coined the name "satyagraha" (truth-force) for his new revolutionary technique. -
Return to India
The following year (1915), he returned to Indian and recieved the kaisar-a-hind gold medal from the viceroy for his services to the empire. -
Second clash with the british empire
After the rowlatt act Gandhi once again entered a dispute with the british empire. This time Gandhi and the other Indians sought independence.
Gandhi claiming: "My life is dedicated to the service of India throgh the religion of non-violence which I believe to be the root of Hinduism." And also if properly supported the movement would achieve self-government within a year. -
Salt march
In 1930 Gandhi undertook his much-publicised march to the sea to break the salt law. Reaching the coast on the 5th of April he and his followers reached the sea. -
Quit India
Congress (guided by Gandhi), adopted the famous quit Indian motion, which meant civil disobedience, and Gandhi was again in jail. -
Independence day
15th of august 1947, instead of celebrating in Delhi he fasted and prayed the whole day in Calcutta. Despite this day signifying the succes of his methods. -
The death of Mahatma Gandhi
On 30th of January one of these (the aggresive military section of the Hindus red.), Nathuram Godse, shot the matahma dead as he approached the dais in a garden in Delhi where he was accustomed to each day lead the people in prayer.
