March Madness

  • Creation

    Creation
Created by the National Association of Basketball Coaches, from the idea of OSU coach Harold Olsen.
  • First year televised

This was the first time the tournament was televised, but it was only partially televised. This helped the event to grow because it was much easier for people to watch the games from their home.
  • Fill out your own bracket

    Fill out your own bracket
People fill out brackets before the tournament starts in an attempt to predict the outcome of the games in the tournament. It is believed that the first bracket was filled out at his time, and it has obviously become very popular since then. Many businesses hold their own contests where if you guess the right games you can win prizes. This helps the organizations to grow and the businesses themselves.
  • CBS broadcast rights

    CBS broadcast rights
CBS obtained broadcast television rights to the NCAA tournament. Before this not all games were televised, but now that all games are televised there are more ads and more revenue.
  • Stadiums become banned

    Stadiums become banned
The NCAA banned the Bon Secours Wellness Arena and Colonial Life Arena in South Carolina from hosting tournament games because of an NAACP protest during a second round tournament game from the states refusal to take down the Confederate Battle Flag from their state capitol. This negatively impacts the event by decreasing revenue from that state, but also positively supports the event because it supports the black community.
  • Stadium capacity

    Stadium capacity
The number of seats needed for final four games is at least 70,000. This allows for more people to watch the games, which allows for more tickets to be sold, which allows for more money to be made, which helps the event to grow.
  • Joint contract

    Joint contract
The NCAA accepted a joint contract with CBS and Turner Sports, a division of Time Warner. The CBS broadcast provides the NCAA with over $500 million annually, and makes up over 90% of the NCAA’s annual revenue.
  • Televised out of country

    Televised out of country
All games are available for viewing nationwide and internationally, especially in the Phillipines and Canada. This allows for more revenue because of the increase in viewers.
  • Number of teams

    Number of teams
At the start of the tournament only 8 teams entered, but through the years the number of teams increased to 68 teams. The organization has grown to the point where they can have 60 more teams than when they first began, and they cantelevise all the games. The number of games brings in more revenue and support.
