Treaty of Paris
The Treaty of Paris was signed to end the Revolutionary War between the United States and Great Britain. This was the final step to American independance. -
Louisiana Purchase
This event gave the United States access to the land west of the Mississippi River. It also doubled the size of the country with 828,000 square miles of land. -

The Adams-Onís Treaty was between the United States and Spain. It was negotiated by Secretary of State, John Quincy Adams and the Spanish Minister to the United States, Don Luis de Onís. It was signed for the purchase of Florida land. -
Industrial Revolution
Factories and machines began to replace handmade processes. This event changed the United States economy and society. New inventions such as railroads, steamboats, and telegraphs improved transportation and communication. This also encouraged slavery expansion. -
Missouri Compromise
This event made Missouri a slave state. It was passed to help regulate slavery in all Western territories. It divided them in 36 degree latitude. -
Monroe Doctrine
This was a United States foreign policy dealing with Latin American nations. It stated that any future efforts by European countries to colonize American land or interfere with the states would be seen as acts of aggression. If this happened, US intervention would be required. It helped to expand the US. -
Indian Removal Act
President Andrew Jackson believed that the national government had the right to regulate where the Native Americans settled. He wanted to remove them from the East and most tribes went peacefully. -
Battle of the Alamo
Mexican troops under President General Antonio Lopez launched an attack against Texas in San Antonio at the Alamo. Many Texan defenders died causing Texas to lose the battle. -
Battle of San Jacinto
Many other Texans and US citizens joined the Texas army because of the Battle of the Alamo. General Sam Houston led them in a retaliation against General Antonio Lopez' army. They were defeated while only nine Texans died. Lopez was held as a prisoner of war. -
Texas Annexation
Texas declared independance (Lone Star Republic) and asked to become a part of the United States. The US agreed to annex Texas which angered Mexico. After this happens, Mexico declares war. -
Oregon Boundary Dispute
Oregon land was claimed by both the US and Great Britian. England wanted the land of 42 Parallel. The United States wanted 54 40 Parallel. They finally came to the compromise of 49 Parallel. -
Mexican-American War
The United States gained California and New Mexico.This war gave future colonels better experience for later. -
Gold Rush
James W. Marshall discovered a gold nugget in the American River. This attracted thousands of immigrants from all over the United States and also other countires. This caused California's population to grow dramatically. -
Gadsden Purchase Treaty
This was an agreement, or treaty, between the United States and Mexico. The US paid Mexico $10 million for a 29,670 square mile portion of their land that later became part of Arizona and New Mexico. This land was used for part of a southern railroad and was an attempt to resolve conflicts left over from the war.
