The Indian Removal Act / Trail of Tears
Andrew Jackson signed a bill that allowed the White settlers to take land that belonged to the Native populations and move them to reservations in Oklahoma where they would live peacefully until there was another grab for land. This forced migration was called the Trail of Tears as it was plagued with diseases and death. -
The Oregon Trail
Trappers had created a trapping route in the early 1800s which was meant to be traveled on horseback or foot. In 1836, it got a whole new use, as it was a route used by many wagon trains to get from Missouri to Oregon. This was the route that many used to get from east to west. -
Manifest Destiny is "Christened"
John Louis O'Sullivan coined the term Manifest Destiny to describe westward expansion. -
