The Original Thirteen Colonies
The United States gained control of the thirteen colonies by.... The Declaration Of Independence is a statement of the second continental congress that defined the colonists right's, outlined their complaints against the British and declared the colinies independence. The American Revolution was from 1774 to 1783 and the revolution weakened our newly formed U.S economy. -
Manifest Destiny
The "Manifest Destiny" is a belief shared by many Americans in the mid-1800's that the United States was meant to expand across the continent to the the Pacific Ocean. They believed that God's blessing's gave them the rights to expand westward and take control of the new lands. -
The Northwest Territory
The United States obtained this land because Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance Of 1887. The five states that were created in the Northwest were Ohio, Indiana, Illnois, Wisconsin and Michigan.The requirerments for a territory to become a state is that the population has to reach 60,000, the territory has to ask Congress for permissionto join the Union as a state. No slavery was allowed, in the state, there has to be a Bill Of Rightsm and there had to be public education. -
Louisiana Purchase
The United States pbtained this land by purchasing it, and we bought it from Spain.The Mississippi River and the city of New Orleans were impoant to the U.S because it would nearly double the size of the United States. -
Adoms-Onis Treaty
The Southerners were upset with the Sminole Indians because the Seminole Indians were aiding runaway slaves, and they were indvading the U.S property.President Monroe sent troops under the command of General Andre Jaskson to secure the border. His action was unconstitutional because he commited this act without direct orders from President Monroe. They both agreeded upon the Adoms- Onis Treaty. The U.S gained east Florida and Spain gained West Florida -
Texas Annexation contiued
A problem that Texashad with its economy and with Mexico was the small population, they relied on agriculture, Mexico refused to honor them as their own country, The U.S didn't allow Texas to enter the union as a state because then there would be more states that allowed slaverythan states that didn't allow slavery. If Texas entered the union as a state, slavery could possible expand in the United States. -
Texas Annexation
The word annex means to take control of and incorporate into a country or state. The newly created Mexican government promised southerners cheap or free land, each man would gain 640 acres of land,they also promise the southerner that they could bring their slaves and they wouldn't mess with them.The Mexican government was taking away slavery and they made it illegal, the southerners had to become Roman Catholics, they had to become mexican citizens and they had to follow the mexican laws. -
Mexican Cession
The main issue that the U.S and Mexico argued over that led to the mexican war was theamount of land, and that Mexico wanted to enter the union as a state. The treaty that ended the Mexican War was the Treaty Of Guadalupe Hidalgo. The states that were created out of the Mexican Cession were California, Nevada, Utah, and most parts of Collorado and Wyoming. These states increased the size of the United States by almost 25%. -
Oregon Territory
The country of Spain originally shared control of the Oregon Territory with the United States. The U.S was trying to avoid a war against Great Britian. The current states that were created in the Oregon Territory were Oregon and Idaho. -
Gadsden Purchase
The United States agreed to purchase the land under the Gadsden Purchase because it would expand the size of the U.S and the U.S was trying to avoid another war. The U.S paided 10 million dollars for the land gained and Arizona and New Mexico were created during the Gadsden Purchase. With the addition of the Gadsden Purchase the Continental Boundaries are finally fixed, and now the belief of the Manifest Destiny is now completed because all of the land in the U.S is now owned by the U.S gov.
