Westward Expansion

The Louisiana Purchase
The Louisiana purchase was an important land purchase the United States has ever made because it doubled the size of the United States at that time, we bought it for only 15 million dollars, and had valuable resouces on the land, The Louisiana purchase accounts for 23% of the United States doubling the original size. This purchase was only 15 million dollars making it about 4 cents an acre. We also gained valuable farmland from this purchase to help our population and expansion in the west. -
The Corps of Discovery
On this important expedition through the new Louisianna territory they had three tasks,to find a passage to the Pacific, to make friends with Native American tribes, and to map out the Louisianna Purchase. The passage to the Pacific would allow greater access for trading and travel for the US. They made friends with tribes for help along the way and supplies for the Corps. The maps they made are crucial to any settlers going west. This expedition greatly improved out knowledge of the territory. -
The War of 1812
The war of 1812 was another set of battles that
changed our history. This war gave us the national
anthem "The Star Spangled Banner",the young country
of the US even more powerful, and started a new
feeling of patriotism. Francis Scott Key was a
prisoner onboard a British ship when he wrote the
national anthem. Once again we clashed with Britain
and ended in a stalement and signed the treaty of
Ghent thus ending the 2nd War of Independance. After
this stalemate we had new sense of pride. -
Florida Territory
The Florida territory was originally owned by Spain so when General Andrew Jackson invaded it without orders we made a deal to buy it for $5 million, signed Adams-Onis treaty, and got the Florida territory to become a state. Jackson going against his orders was a good thing because we ended up getting another state. The Adams-Onis treaty was signed and the territory only cost the US 5 million dollars. Florida is now the 27th state in the US and that was made possible by Andrew Jackson. -
The Monroe Doctrine
This document was important because it kept new countries from taking more land, it promoted the expansion of the US ,and helped the US to gain land. New counries were prohibited from taking any land in the Americas keeping them out of the land race. This document also promoted the expansion of the US by keeping those European countries out of North America so we could expand. When we kept other countries out we gained more land. -
Indian Removal
This removal was unlawful, destroyed tribes, but helped Americans move for their resources. The supreme court ruled that the Natives on their lands had right to be there and were immune to the state laws, but President Jackson moved them anyways. There were 5 tribes that were forced from their lands to move to Oklahoma reservations. Even though this killed thousands the Americans just moved on their lands for the Natives resources. -
Texas Territory
Texas wasnt always a state it was its own country! The republic of Texas was an important land gain,a important part of a change in slavery laws, and started tension between the US and Mexico. Texas was a great gain of 268,820 square miles when it was annexed by James K. Polke. When Texas joined the US it changed the balance of the Nothern and Southern states and it was said it should be a slave state. When Texas joined the US Mexico threatened to declare war for letting Texas in the Union. -
Mexican American War
The Mexican American war is the follow up from the Texas annexation. This war is important because we were fighting for Texas, the borders of Texas, and the treaty which decided that the US would pay $15 million for the Southwest territory. Mexico was still fighting for Texas and its borders. Mexico disagreed about Texas' borders and started the war. After the war was over the Mexican and American governments signed the treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo and gave the US the southwest territory. -
The Oregon Territory
The Oregon territory was not bought nor sold but agreed upon by Great Britain and the US. The Orego territory was another important land gain, it was a gateway to the Pacific ocean, and a valuable land of resources. This territory was decided by the signing of a treaty between Britain and America to decide where the territory ended for the US. The territory had a passage to the Atlantic making it a valuable place of trade. This territory also had dense forrests perfect for logging for resources.
