    Americans had a dream that someday they could expand their land. The land was mostly everything east of the Mississippi River, but they wanted more.
  • The Louisiana Territory

    The Louisiana Territory
    The Lousiana Territory was the nation's first opportunity for expansion. This territory was owned by France before it was bought by America. President Jefferson sent James Monroe tp bargain with Napoleon Bonaparte for Louisiana, and Napoleon offered to sell all of it. On April 30, 1803, James Monroe agreed. He sold it for $15 million.

    The Explorers
    In 1803 Lewis and Clark led their expedition across the Louisiana Territory. It took two years to complete. This journey opened up a path for future settlement.
  • Florida

    Florida
    After acquiring Louisiana Territory, Jefferson thought he could get more land. He looked at Florida. Spain had owned Florida at the time and in Georgia the Seminole tribes were attacking. President Monroe sent Andrew Jackson to Georgia in 1818 to help it with the attacks. Instead, Jackson marched in Florida with his troops and did many bad things to them. Spain was fearing war so they got out of Florida. U.S. paid $5 million to Spain settlers in return.

    Texans met at a settlement called Washington-on-the-Brazos to decide what to do about Santa Anna's troops. His troops defeated Texans, leaving the survivors very angry.
  • Oregon Country

    Oregon Country
    Oregon was claimed by Russia, Spain, Great Britain, and the United States. A little later Russia and Spain dropped out of claiming Oregon. The U.S. wanted all of Oregon, and they were willing to fight for it. But Great Britain wasn't risking to start a war, so they made an treaty with the United States and Oregon was added to the U.S. in 1846.

    As Mexico declared independence from Spain, Stephen F. Austin arrived in Texas. With Mexican agreements, Austin begang his colony. Soon, tons of settlers came to Texas. Due to Mexico closing immigration to Americans, Texans rebeled against Mexican government. After wars with Santa Anna (the general of the Mexican government), Texas finally gained independence and became admitted to the U.S. in 1845.

    Miners discovered gold and brought 250,000 people to California.

    The Mexican-American War
    United States went to war with Mexico in 1846. Eventually Mexico surrendered and signed the 'Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo' which gave up a vast region known as the Mexican Cession to the U.S.

    Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo brought an official end to the Mexican-American War.

    In the 1840's men went to California to mine, but knew little about it. Mexicans introduced new tools and methods to mining, and that effected the way people mined. It made it much easier.

    James Gadsden bought the land below the Mexican Cession for $10 million. He wanted this land because it was flat and would work good as a railroad route.
