The U.S. gained control of this land by winning the revolutionary war. The Declaration of Independence was created with 3 main ideas. !. All men posess unalienable rights. 2. King George III violated the colonists rights. 3. Colonies had the right to break away from Great Britain. The American Revolution lasted 7 years. This made the economy poor because their was a massive death. -
Louisiana Purchase
Jefferson wanted to keep the French from controlling New Oleans, but didnt want to start a war. New Orleans and the Mississippi river were so important to the U.S. because from New Orleans, France could control trade along the Mississippi river. President Jefferson is credited with purchasing this land from France. They purchased it for $15 million. With the Louisiana purchase, the size of the U.S. doubled. -
Adams-Onis Treaty
The southerners were upset with the Seminole Indians because they were raiding the U.S towns. President Monroe sent troops under the command of General Jackson to secure the boarders. Jacksons troops invaded Florida to capture Seminole Indians. The Adams-Onis Treaty is what the U.S. and Spain agreed apon. Spain gave East Florida to the U.S. and gave up its claims to west Florida. The U.S. gave up its claims to what is now Texas. -
Manifest Destiny
By the 1840s many Americans shared Senator Calhoun's view. The U.S. they thought, was sure to expand all the way to the Pacific Ocean. They beleived that nothing could stop this growth. Americans also believed that God gave them the right to expand westward and take control of new lands. -
Texas Annexation
Americans moved to Texas because of the empresarios and because of Stephen F. Austin. He promised cheap or free land and that each man could receive 640 acres. Mexico had 4 requirments for foreign immagrants. 1. No slavery. 2. Obey the Roman Catholic Church. 3. Obey Mexican Laws. 4. Become Mexican citizens. In order for Texas to become a republic, Houston soliders had to retreat east, and in 2 weeks, have written a constition like the U.S. Slavery could've expanded westward if Texas was allowed. -
Oregon Territory
Great Britain shared control of the Oregon Territory with the U.S. The U.S was trying to avoid war with Great Britain so they signed a teaty called the Adams-Onis Treaty. Oregon, Washington, Idaho, and parts of Wyoming and Monatna were all created under the Oregon Territory. -
Mexican Cession
Mexico cut off all diplomatic ties with the U.S. Mexico also ordered American settlers to leave California and banned further American imigration there. The name of the treaty that ended the Mexican-American War was the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. Under the Mexican Cession, California, Nevada, Utah, most of Arizona and New Mexico, and parts of Colorado were created. The size of the U.S. increased by 25% -
Gadsden Purchase
The United States agreed to purchase land under the Gadsden Purchase because they only had to pay $10 million to Mexico for the southern states of the U.S. The Gadsden Purchase was created because the U.S. was trying to avoid war between Mexico. Under the Gadsden purchase Arizona and New Mexico were created. With the addition of the Gadsden Purchase, the continental boundaries of the U.S. were finally fixed. The beleif of Manifest Destiny is now complete because the U.S. expanded westward.
