Greece was a rich civilization whose people lived by farming,crafts,trading,fishing and many other jobs.Greece was later conquered by Rome but Greek culture still has a heavy influence on the world today.Even the Romans borrowed and "improoved" Greek ideas.A good example of Greek influence is the dome on the top of our capitol building, it was a Greek design. -

Rome began as a settlement of farmers and shephards in Italy,It developed and expanded to become a powerful city-state that borrowed many Greek ideas.As all large countries Rome had many problems, mainly internal problems, one of their many problems were econimic problems.Eventually they led to Rome's downfall.The picture to the left is an old Roman colloseum.Here people fought for entertainment. -

Exploration and Colonization of the Iberian Peninsula
People lived in Spain long before today.These people were hunters and gatherers who had found the Iberian peninsula from North Africa.5000 years ago people known as the Iberians occupied the land.The Iberian people had very advanced culture.Later the Phonecians also sailed to the peninsula and settled there.about 600 B.C a group called the Celtics came to the Iberian Peninsula and about the same time Greeks set up trading posts in the area.Romans later also took over the Iberian P eninsula. -

Black Plague and Fuedalism
The Black Plague lasted for 3 terrible years and before these 3 years and partly through it the most popular social system was the fuedal system.In the feudal system a vassal would pledge his loyalty to the king and get protection and land in return.The vassal would have peasants work on his land.During the black plague many people died and that forced the peasants to work long hours for low pay.The peasants revolted and readjusted the social system of Europe.Thus feudalism ended. -
French Revolutiom
Kings and Nobles in France did not have to pay taxes but forced the commoners to.This made the people angry.After forming the national assembly the people people began rioting and looting the streets.To keep control the king called troops to keep the order.In response the people stormed the bastille a prison whic symbolized the king.Seeing this the king realized he could not control the people he stepped down from power and Napoleon Bonaparte came to power. -

The second part of the industrial revolution started in the U.S and during this time people made great advances in communication and transportation.One of the inventions during this time was the automobile. -

There were 2 parts to the industrial revolution.The first part was led by England.The invention that were made in the industrial revolution changed the world back then and also shaped our world today.One of the first invention of the first part of the revolution was the steam engine.The steam engine made steam to power things that used to be powered by human, thi set the stage for many other invention to come. -
Balkans
The first Balkan war started when the countries of Bulgaria Serbia Greece and Montenegro formed an alliance to overtake the the Ottoman Empire.As a result of the war the the alliance took over and split the land.Bulgaria started the second Balkan war by attacking its former allies,the former allies attacked back and Bulgaria lost the war.Seeing this opportunity the Ottoman empire again took over some land in the Balkans which its borders still last today. -
Russian Revolution part 2
The Bolsheviks converted Russia into a communist government. The Russian Civil War was the largest challenge the Bolsheviks had to face.The 2 groups were the "Reds" and "Whites".The Reds were the Bolsheviks who believed in communism and the Whites were other groups who did not believe in communism.The Whites had many defeats in the war and eventually Lenin and his Bolshevik party had complete control over Russia -
Russian Revolution part 1
During WW1 Russia was an absolute monarchy ruled by the Tsar Nicholas II. Russia was suffering terrible losses in WW1 and most of the countries resources went to the army this made living in Russia very difficult. The people were angry and forced the tsar to resign. 2 groups came to power, the Bolsheviks and the Mensheviks. The Bolsheviks took control of Russia led by Vladimir Lenin and signed a treaty with Germany that took Russia out of WW1. -

World War 2 was fought between the Axis Powers ( which included Italy,Germany,Japan the 3 main countries) and the Allies (which included the U.S,Britain,France and other smaller countries).Germany began the war by launching an invasion on Poland but the war ended with the surrender of Germany,(May 8 1945) and Japan (August 14 1945). -
Modern Welfare State
Countries in Scandanavia and the Baltics have an exstensive modern welfare system.In some countries they have a public day-care facility for 2-6 year olds.And after birth parents get a 12 month leave with pay.The government also provides free or almost free healthcare.Although people who live in these countries have all of these benifits they have to pay much higher taxes then people in the U.S.
